Everything you need to know about finding a Floor Coating Supplier

Floor Coating Products

Many floor surfaces can be enhanced in both function and beauty just by applying an inexpensive floor coating. The most common floor types making use of floor coatings are wood, tiles and cement floors.

Types of Floor Coatings

Floor coating products are typically designed for:
  • Timber floors
  • Tiles
  • Concrete floors

Timber Floor Coatings

Timber floors require a coating to manage the high workload that foot traffic can cause on it. Timber floor coatings are usually manufactured in some sort of varnish or oil. Both materials help preserve the wood although their applications completely differ. Clear wood varnishes are typically applied for protection of the surface, but also to maintain the natural look of the wood. Wood varnishes which also stain wood can be found in many colours, and can therefore fit in well with any home design or motif.

Tile Coatings

A relatively recent advancement in flooring has been coatings for tiles. This is specifically used to refurbish and protect tiles. The two primary coating types include sealers and nonslip coatings.

Sealers

Sealers also have two primary floor coating options. One penetrates while the other seals.

Penetrating sealers are not just designed to add a protective film over the tile. They are also absorbed into the tile’s pores to help keep out any dirt or moisture. It offers permanent protection while maintaining the natural look of the tiles. The type of sealer does not, however, enhance the appearance of the tile.

Topical tiles sealers
are only placed on the surface of the tile. The purpose is to create a film-like barrier which offers protection. The protection can last for a number of years and can enhance the appearance of the tile by creating a glossy shine. The protection, however, is not permanent and its application not as hard wearing as penetrating sealers

Nonslip Coatings

Tiles are high risk areas in the home, as they are naturally very smooth. They are also usually found in high moisture areas or wet spots such as bathrooms and kitchens. This creates the potential for serious injuries. There are a number of nonslip coatings for tiles that can either be painted on or applied as a sticky film. Some nonslip coatings are designed to be almost invisible as not to affect the appearance of the tile, while still making it safer.

Cement Floor Coatings

Gone are the days that cement floors are only used in factories and warehouses. Cement is commonly used in the modern home for flooring, but needs to be coated. Cement coatings are either paint-on varnish-like material that protects the cement from moisture and dirt, and makes it look glossy. Vinyl or latex base cement coatings are also available making cement floors very durable as well as easy to clean. These coatings are supplied as a paint-on liquid or in sheets which are glued on.

Use a Professional

Every floor coating has a very specific function. Therefore, be sure to get expert advice as to the best coating for your floor regardless if it is wood, tile or cement. Paying a professional to apply the floor coatings is also important. This is because you are assured of the best advice, professional workmanship and guarantees when doing this.

How Much Are Floor Coatings?

Waterborne polyurethane coatings are generally the costliest type of floor coating, followed by solvent based coatings, with oil based finishes the most cost effective. Pricing is typically on a volume basis and quoted based on a square metre basis.
