5 Good Reasons to Double Glaze Your Windows

Last Updated Apr 17, 2014 · Written by Jaclyn Fitzgerald

Your windows can make up a significant area of your home but if you have the wrong windows, you can find your house becoming too hot or too cold, that it is too noisy inside, or even that you have problems with condensation and moisture.  Double glazing reduces or eliminates these problems and has even more benefits on top, so it’s no wonder that they are the standard in many parts of the world.  Here’s what you need to know about the benefits of double glazing. For more information, see our windows feature.

1. Double Glazing is Thermally Efficient

Double glazing is thermally efficient as there are two panes of glass, between which a layer of air is trapped. Due to this design, it is more difficult for heat or cold to enter or leave the home through the glass.  This means that you spend a lot less on heating and cooling your home and you also reduce your greenhouse gas emissions as you are not operating your heater or air conditioner as much.

2. Double Glazing Reduces Sound Transmission

The design of double glazing means that as well as being thermally efficient, the windows are also extremely acoustically efficient. This means that they are very effective at reducing the transmission of noise, making the inside of your home much more comfortable.  The amount of sound entering your home can be reduced by as much as seventy percent in some cases.

3. Double Glazing Gets Rid of Condensation

Condensation occurs when warm inside air meets the cold surface of the glass, causing water to bead up. Installing double glazing reduces or even eliminates the problem of condensation as there is a barrier between the outermost pane of glass and the inner pane of glass.  Simply speaking, the inner pane of glass never gets cold enough for condensation to occur.

4. Double Glazing Gives You Freedom in Window Coverings

Are you forced to use heavy window treatments in order to try and stop heat or cold entering through your single pane windows?  This can be a thing of the past with double glazing as it is so efficient that you can choose to use lighter coverings that give you privacy only or you can even get rid of window coverings altogether if you want to make the most of a beautiful view.

5. Double Glazing is Secure

Double glazing is also a great way to increase the security of your home. Single pane windows are a weak point security-wise as they are easily broken. Double glazed windows however are made up of two panes of glass that are often thicker than regular glass or have special laminates attached and these make them harder for intruders to get through.
