When should you consider built-in wardrobes?

Last Updated Jun 24, 2016 · Written by Rob Schneider

Freestanding wardrobes are less expensive than built-in wardrobes and may be a better choice when you're on a budget or are planning on moving soon. When should you consider built-in wardrobes?

alt

By definition, a built-in wardrobe is a seamless part of a room design. If you're renovating or building, the wardrobe can be part of your design and you can allocate space for it. If you have space for a built-in wardrobe in your bedroom, it will cost more than it would if it was part of a building project or larger renovation. At the very least, your carpenter will have to install plasterboard to fill in the space and you will have to repaint the bedroom to make the wardrobe look like a seamless part of the room.

If you're not building or renovating, but still want a built-in wardrobe, consider hiring a cabinet maker to design and build your wardrobe for you. They can take exact measurements of a space and build a wardrobe to fit the space. When they install it, they will fasten it firmly in place and use mouldings to fill in gaps in the wall and ceiling. The wardrobe will fit neatly into the room and become a feature of the bedroom.

Why Should You Consider a Built-In Wardrobe?

Why should you consider a built-in wardrobe in your new home build or renovation project? There are several good reasons to install one:

  • A built-in wardrobe is an integral part of the room design
  • Built-ins can be larger than freestanding wardrobes
  • A built-in wardrobe can take up less space than a freestanding wardrobe of the same size
  • You can customise storage areas to suit your needs

The drawback to most freestanding wardrobes is that much of the interior space goes to waste. When you're designing a built-in wardrobe, you can have it built to specifications that allow you to make use of all the internal space and be able to access everything you need easily.

Your cabinet maker or carpenter can build your wardrobe to your specifications and use inexpensive wardrobe inserts to keep costs down. Wardrobe suppliers have all the inserts you need to customise your wardrobe. Just as cabinet makers use standard inserts in the kitchen, they can use these inserts in your wardrobe.

If you want a walk-in wardrobe, but can't afford custom-made cabinets, your carpenter can build a room and you can use flatpack wardrobe components to fit out your walk-in wardrobe.

alt

The least expensive way to install a built-in wardrobe is to include it in your new home or renovation plans. If you're not doing renovations, get quotes from cabinet makers and find out how much more it will cost to have a wardrobe built into your existing bedroom. When you compare prices, you may decide it's worth paying more for a custom built-in wardrobe than to make do with a store bought wardrobe that's not quite right.
