What trades do I need for a complete kitchen renovation?

Last Updated Sep 14, 2018 · Written by Rob Schneider

Australians love to renovate. In 2015, they spent $7.2 billion on renovations, which was twice as much as in 2000. Statistics show that kitchen renovations are the most popular type of home renovation. It makes sense since the kitchen is no longer an isolated part of the house. It is often the heart of the home and a kitchen renovation is usually done to make the kitchen a beautiful and useful part of the home.

What trades do I need for a complete kitchen renovation? It will depend on the kitchen. Many older homes have separate kitchens, so you may need additional services to create an open plan kitchen. These are the trades you may need for a complete kitchen renovation. You may not need all of them, but consider them all because they can all be an important part of a kitchen renovation.

  1. A kitchen cabinet maker
  2. When you need a builder
  3. Flooring may be next
  4. Hire a lighting expert
  5. Find a good tiler or splashback supplier
  6. Plumber
  7. Painter
  8. Window installer
  9. Ventilation expert

A kitchen cabinet maker

A kitchen cabinet maker may be the first person to consult. Most kitchen renovations specialists have kitchen designers available who can help you plan your kitchen. They can help you plan your kitchen before you hire a builder to knock down walls and draw plans you can work from.

If you start by consulting a kitchen designer, it can help overcome some mistakes you may make along the way. You may not need to knock out as many walls as you think you need to remove or the designer may suggest leaving part of one wall intact to help define the kitchen area. Once you know what you want, the kitchen cabinet maker can come back and install the kitchen cabinets and will help you with the other trades you need.

When you need a builder

If the kitchen is a separate room and you want to create an open plan kitchen, a builder's services will be necessary. You may need to get council approval for the work if it is extensive because many walls are load-bearing walls and the builder will need to reinforce them. This can be relatively expensive and may require building approval.

When you need a builder

The builder will only be able to remove walls and support the area where the walls have been removed. A builder can also make the area fit in with the rest of the house, but they can't paint your walls or do your flooring.

Flooring may be next

After the builder has knocked out walls and tidied up their work, you may need to have flooring installed. Since a wall or walls have been removed, there will be places where you have no flooring. If you have hardwood floors, the flooring may be under the wall, but you will still need to have the flooring repaired, sanded and polished. If you don't have hardwood floors, new flooring will be needed to cover the area.

Flooring may be next

For some flooring ideas, read What Flooring Options are Out There? Many types of hard flooring materials can be ideal for the kitchen, but keep in mind that some may be better for a family kitchen than others. Kitchen floors can get wet and non-slip flooring may be better for some kitchens. Non-slip flooring materials are usually softer underfoot and may help prevent breakage if something gets dropped. Some vinyl tiles can be brilliant for the kitchen and modern vinyl tiles can also be a stylish addition to the kitchen, but it is a matter of personal preference. You may prefer tiled floors, polished concrete or another type of flooring material.

Hire a lighting expert

Most kitchen renovation companies have electricians on hand who can install necessary electricity for the kitchen. However, modern kitchens often need more than the basics. Today's kitchens have more than one overhead task light. They may have task lighting in several places as well as accent lighting and statement lighting. For some tips on kitchen lighting, read 7 Ways to Light Up Your Kitchen.

Hire a lighting expert

Hire a lighting expert and plan your lighting ahead of time. They can install most of your lighting for you and the electrician who works for the kitchen renovation company can install lighting in your overhead cupboards and other areas of your kitchen.

Find a good tiler or splashback supplier

Every kitchen needs tiling. In many cases, tiling may be combined with a kitchen splashback. After you have your kitchen design ready and you know the style and colours of the kitchen, you will need to find the perfect tiles and/or splashbacks for your kitchen.

Find a good tiler or splashback supplier

Most tilers have extensive experience tiling kitchens and can help you choose the perfect tiles for your kitchen. Aside from the colours of the tiles, they can help you with the size of the tiles and even the type of tiles that would be perfect for the kitchen. They may suggest an unusual combination of tiles that can make a big impact in the kitchen.

Plumber

Obviously, every kitchen renovation requires a plumber to install sinks and other plumbing. In most cases, kitchen renovation companies will have plumbers on hand to install plumbing. You may want to discuss plumbing with a kitchen designer first, though. If you have a large kitchen, having an extra sink can be handy. It will cost more and the plumber will have to come in before the kitchen is installed to install the pipes and get the area ready for the new sink.

Painter

Another trade you may need is a painter. A painter can help you choose the perfect colour of paint for your walls and ceiling. You may even want to hire a colour consultant to help you find colours that are best for the kitchen and don't clash with the colours in your dining room or living room.

Window installer

If the windows in the kitchen aren't large enough or are outdated, you may also need to hire a window installer. They should come in before the kitchen is installed and the kitchen renovation company must know how large the windows are going to be and what type of windows you are purchasing. You may want to replace sliding windows with bi-fold windows to open up the kitchen to the outdoors. If you do that, you may also want to extend the benchtop to pass food and beverages through to the patio.

Ventilation expert

Ventilation is also important in the kitchen. A ventilation expert can install a ducted range hood for you if you want the ultimate in kitchen ventilation. A ducted system will expel all the air while a recirculating range hood may not be enough for your needs.

Choosing your trades

Start with an overall plan and know which trades you need for your kitchen renovation. Having a kitchen designer first can help you think of things you may have overlooked. Write down a list of the trades and get three quotes from each trade. Look at their qualifications as well as their prices. The kitchen is the heart of the home and you want it to be perfect.
