Options in Wall Units

Last Updated Oct 14, 2010 · Written by Kerry Finch

Wall units are furnishings that are built into an internal wall of a room to provide shelf and storage space, maximize space, improve insulation and add style. Wall units may be pre-manufactured or specially constructed to match the décor of your home. Wall units that are sold as ready-made units are easy to install, with our without professional help.

Wall units are usually made from wood materials such as oak, maple, cedar, beech and other hard woods, MDF or particle boards, or a combination of solid and wood veneers. Depending on the look you want to achieve, you may also incorporate metal and glass materials into your wall unit, either as shelves, doors or accessories.

There are many types of wall units, each adding style and function to any room. Some of the common types of wall units include:

Entertainment wall unit

The entertainment wall unit is typically found in the living room where it houses the TV unit, DVD player, game console, stereo system, audio speakers, microphones, headphones, compact discs and other accessories. With this type of wall unit, you can keep wires, cables and satellite receivers out of sight and store remote controls for added convenience. An entertainment unit with a built-in outlet strip and surge protector works best for plugging your electrical appliances discreetly.
Bathroom vanity wall unit

De-clutter and maximise the space in your bathroom with a wall unit that is composed of a mirror, wash basin, faucet, storage cabinet and shelf. A vanity wall unit also adds sophistication to your bathroom.

Kitchen wall unit

Keep your kitchen organized and save space with a kitchen wall unit that combines shelves and storage units for keeping a waste bin, storage baskets, pull out baskets, wine racks, spice racks, a carousel unit, cutlery trays, a pull out table, towel rail and some trays. Look for a kitchen wall unit that allows you to install fluorescent lights behind pelmets, for illuminating a work top.
Wall bed units

A wall bed is also known as a Murphy bed. It is a bed that is specially built to fold into a wall where it is concealed behind wooden cabinet doors. The wall bed unit is primarily a space saver solution for small apartments, guest rooms, small bedrooms or recreation rooms. A wall bed unit may be fitted with side cabinets for additional storage.

There are no limits when it comes to designing other types of wall units for any room in your home. The possibilities are endless as these may be constructed using various types of materials and incorporating innovative storage solutions to suit your specific needs.
