Top home jobs for August

Last Updated Aug 3, 2017 · Written by Rob Schneider

August is one of those in between months. It's still winter, but the warmer months are coming soon. What are the top jobs for August? They are mainly jobs to get ready for the warmer months ahead.

  1. Plant a Garden All Year 'Round
  2. Get Decked Out for the Warmer Months
  3. Automated Lighting Can Make the Home Smart and Secure
  4. Hire a Handyman for Indoor or Outdoor Projects
  5. Are the Carpets Holding Up?
  6. Why Paint the House in August?

Plant a Garden All Year 'Round

Plant a garden all year round

Don't neglect landscaping and gardening in August. There are plenty of ways to improve the garden and get ready for the warmer months ahead. Plant veggies to enjoy in the autumn months and plant flowers that bloom in August and the months ahead. You may even want to plant a tree or two. What plants grow best in August?

Don't forget to weed, mulch, prune and fertilise if necessary. The garden will appreciate the extra nutrients when plants come out of dormancy when the weather gets warmer. If you don't already have a compost heap, think about creating one. A compost heap is a great way to use vegetable scraps and lawn clippings. For some tips on creating a compost heap, read Create Your Own Compost.

Get Decked Out for the Warmer Months

If you don't have decking, August is a great month to have it installed. The decking will be there for you in the warmer months. Don't wait until summer because you'll miss out on barbies on the deck while the deck is being built.

Get decked out for the warmer months

What sort of deck should you build? No matter how much or little space is in the garden, there is space for a deck. If space is at a premium, build a long, narrow deck. If it's big enough for some chairs, it's big enough. If you have more space, think about creating decking zones. One zone can be for relaxing and another zone can be a barbecue area. For some ideas, read Unusual Decking Ideas and Materials. Even a smaller deck can look stunning if it's laid out in an unusual way.

Also think about decking materials. Timber decking is the first thing that comes to mind, but it's not the only option. Composite decking is easy to maintain and good for areas near water or close to the ground. Composite decking won't rot or become warped like timber decking that becomes wet or is close to the ground. It also looks great and comes in a variety of natural timber and other colours.

August can be the perfect month to have decking installed. Decking installers are often busiest in the summer months. In August, they may be able to get straight on to the job and finish quickly. You'll have your decking well in advance of the warmer months.

Automated Lighting Can Make the Home Smart and Secure

August is a good month to install automated lighting. Why do it in August? For one thing, you don't want to wait until summer. When you go on holidays, having automated lighting will add an extra element of security to the home. Automated lighting comes with an app that makes it possible to control the lighting from wherever you happen to be.

Automated lighting for a smart and secure home

Automated lighting works in two ways. It can be programmed or you can manually turn lights on and off. It's a great way to make the home look occupied even from halfway around the world. For example, turn on the bedroom lights after dark and turn them off at "bedtime." Potential intruders will think someone is in the house.

You will also appreciate having smart lighting in the home even when you're at home or at work. It's always nice to have the porch light on after dark. Program the lights to turn on at dusk or simply turn them on using an app if you're late coming home. Automated lighting is the wave of the future, but it's a wave that is with us now. Find out how convenient having automated lighting is in August and expand the automated lighting system as you need more lights. Automated smart lighting can also save money because it uses LED lights, which are far less expensive to run than incandescent light bulbs.

Hire a Handyman for Indoor or Outdoor Projects

A good handyman is "handy" with tools. While you have to hire a builder for many larger jobs, a handyman can build a pet house, add a doggy door or even build a chicken coop. If it doesn't require a trade licence, a handyman is a good choice for all those indoor and outdoor jobs you don't have time to do.

Hire a handyman for indoor or outdoor projects

Have a look around the house and make a list of things a handyman can do. It's better to have them do a lot of jobs at once than to have them come to the house for an hour or so to do a small job. Handymen may charge a travel fee for small jobs, but if they have a day's worth of work to do, it will be less expensive and they can work more efficiently. Are the Carpets Holding Up?

Carpets can wear out and you may need to have yours replaced. Why not do it in August? If the carpets are in decent shape, they may still need repairing or you may want to have the carpets cleaned in time for the better weather that will be coming soon. You may even be tired of the colour of the carpets. Did you know you can have carpet dyeing done?

Are carpets holding up

Have a look at the carpets and get any jobs out of the way before the warmer months, when you'll want to relax rather than have busy work to do.

Why Paint the House in August?

If you're planning on selling your house, spring is the best time for selling. You want the house to be in tip-top condition to fetch the highest price. Rather than wait until spring, have the house exterior and/or interior painted in August. Then you can be ready to sell the house.

Why paint the house in August?

If you're not planning on selling, August can be a good month for painting. Why? For the same reason you might want to get other jobs out of the way. The warmer months are for relaxing. Wouldn't you rather relax on the new deck than oversee a painting job in summer?

Get these jobs out of the way in August and enjoy the warmer months that will be coming soon. You won't regret it when the house and yard are ready for spring.
