Soft furnishings are home accessories that add colour, texture, softness and design to any room in your home. They are typically made of fabric materials as curtains, cushions, valances, tiebacks, wall panels, pillows, throws, and furniture upholstery. Soft furnishings often provide the finishing touches to any room or may be used to update its look and style without spending much money.
The following are some things to consider when choosing soft furnishings:
Curtains and Roman blinds are some of the usual window treatments that not only beautify a room but also provide insulation, light filtration and privacy. Fabric materials that match or complement the colour and theme of your room pull its look together. Consider also how your curtains will look from the outside especially if your windows are facing public areas. Give some thought to the wrong side of your curtains or blinds so that your windows appear stylish on the outside as they are on the inside. Curtains may also be accessorized with tiebacks, valances and pelmets.
Cushions and pillows may provide seating comfort or add visual appeal to a couch or bed. Choose washable materials and add zippers for your cushion covers for easy replacement. While it is best to have your curtains and cushion covers in matching designs and fabrics, not all patterns and curtain materials work well as cushion or pillow covers. When in doubt, obtain a swatch or small sample of a fabric and view it at home during various times of the day.
Throws are blankets that you may leave at the foot of your bed or hanging over the back of a couch or chair for easy access during cold weather. These may also be used for decorative purposes as throws add a sense of warmth to any furnishing. If your bed or couch is in a neutral colour, adding a patterned throw provides contrast to your furniture.
A fabric wall panel with padding is a decorative feature that instantly adds elegance to any bedroom. You can also use a fabric wall panel as your bed’s headboard. Fabric wall panels are made to measure and easily personalized using fabrics and patterns to complement your bedroom.
