Options in Decorative Fencing

Last Updated Apr 6, 2011 · Written by Jaclyn Fitzgerald

Fencing is a necessity for many homes but that doesn’t mean that you have to settle for something plain or just downright boring.  Turn your fencing into a feature by using one of the great decorative fencing options now available.  Here’s what you need to know.

Decorative PVC Fencing

One great option for your decorative fencing is to use the popular PVC fencing that is available.  These are moulded to look just like painted wood, and you can find them in picket form, so you can create a truly charming picket fence out of low maintenance plastic.  No more worrying about painting your fence every couple of years, or if you have to replace sections due to warping or decay.  Best of all, you don’t have to worry about termites and the PVC will never fade, so your fence will stay looking amazing for years.  If picket fences aren’t your style, you can also use PVC fencing to create the wood-rail style that is so popular on farms.

Decorative Iron Fencing

Perhaps the ultimate in decorative fencing would have to be decorative iron fencing which is available in either wrought iron or moulded iron, depending on your budget and preferences.  These types of fences can be as simple or as ornate as you like and they are perfect for creating an absolutely stunning border around your property.  Decorative iron fencing is commonly black in colour but it can be available in other colours such as dark green, creams, greys, and so on.  Iron fencing can be used on its own or it can be combined with other materials such as brick, stone and concrete to create some stunning looks.

Decorative Aluminium Fencing

Aluminium is a great choice for decorative fencing as it is less expensive than other types of metal fencing and it can create some great looks.  It can be cast into decorative panels or be as simple as tubular fencing.  It can be used as a standalone fence if desired or it can be combined with other materials such as glass, brick, stone, or concrete to create a range of attractive looks.  Aluminium fencing is also available in a range of colours so that you can be sure that the fence will match to your home.

Decorative Timber Fencing

For those that are a bit more traditionalist at heart, you can use timber fencing to create some truly stunning looks.  Of course, there is the standard picket fence, but you can also use timber fence panels, or even the new wave of bamboo fencing products that are available.  One of the best things about using timber fencing for decoration is the versatility that you have.  You can choose to take advantage of the natural colours of the timber or you can paint the fencing any colour that you like.  Timber fencing can suit any style of home, from Colonial right through to ultra modern.
