How Much Does Lawn Mowing Cost?

Last Updated Feb 7, 2018 · Written by Craig Gibson

Do you like mowing your lawn or is it a time-consuming chore you'd rather leave up to others?

Are you happy with your lawn mowing results or do you wish your lawn looked as good as your neighbour's, who hires a professional lawn mowing service? Is the only thing holding you back a fear of the exorbitant cost of hiring a service? If so, why not find out how much lawn mowing costs and what comes with the service?

How often should you mow your lawn?

Most lawns in good health will benefit from being mown every two weeks in the growing (summer) season, and once a month on the winter. This will also depend on where you live, how long the growing season is and what variety of lawn you have. The key is to not cut it too short otherwise it can be damaged by the sun.

Caring for your lawn

Besides mowing you also need to make sure your lawn is watered and fed.

The key to watering is to let your lawn dry out between, as this stimulates root growth and will help it get through extended dry spells. In terms of the seasons, in summer water in the evening or early morning to minimise losing it all to evaporation, and water less frequently in autumn and spring. Depending on where you live, you may only need to water your lawn occasionally if at all in winter.

Your lawn will also appreciate being fertilised which gives it the necessary minerals, especially when it is establishing itself. Other key times to feed it are during the peak growing spurt of spring, during summer and in autumn to sustain it through winter.

How much does lawn mowing cost?

You may be able to hire a neighbour's teenager to mow your lawn for $10 an hour using your lawn mower, but that's not a professional service. Professional lawn mowing services charge about the same as general garden maintenance services. On average, it works out to about $40 an hour, but can be as low as $25 an hour or as high as $60 or more. That's quite a spread, so you'll want to choose your service carefully.

A lawn mowing service may cost you:

  • $60 to have your lawn mown once, but as little as $40 or $50 if they do your mowing regularly, such as a fortnightly or monthly service
  • $120 per hour more for a ride-on lawn mowing service

This should include grass cutting and removal of debris and grass clippings, but generally will not include other services like sidewalk edging and trimming.

How much does instant lawn cost?

And if you are wondering what maintenance-free instant lawn costs, low to mid-priced synthetic grass can cost anywhere from $50 to $75 per square metre (installed), while better quality lawn will be more like $75 to $100 per square metre (installed). Regular turf or lawn, sold in rolls, costs significantly less, anywhere from $25 to $35 per square metre, but you do have more maintenance costs with real lawn.

Choosing a lawn mowing service

If you just want a one-off lawn mowing, it's probably safe to settle for the lowest quote and hope for the best. If you want regularly scheduled lawn mowing, though, you want a service you can count on to:

  • Arrive on time, every time.
  • Work quickly and efficiently.
  • Do quality lawn mowing that improves the appearance and health of your lawn.

Aside from mowing, your garden is likely to also need a general clean up and tidy. It's better to hire a lawn mowing service that also provides weed control, fertilising, aerating and other lawn maintenance services than just someone to mow your lawn.

Another thing to consider when choosing a lawn mowing service is how often they will actually come and mow your lawn. Will you have to enter a contract to have it done weekly, fortnightly or monthly, or will you have the freedom to call them and have them come out whenever you need them? This is important as some people will require a regular service that they just pay for every month and not have to worry about it past that, while others may need just a once or twice off service to help them get back on top of their lawn maintenance.

Hiring a lawn mowing service

When it comes time to hiring a lawn mowing service make sure they are right for your job. Some questions to ask them include:

  • What are your rates?
  • Do you provide other services?
  • Do you hold valid insurance?
  • Can you provide a written quote?
  • How long will my job take?
  • Do you have references I can follow up?

Once you are satisfied they have the necessary qualifications and experience you can ask them to quote on your job.

Getting quotes for lawn mowing

The easiest way to get an idea of cost is to get quotes from local lawn mowing services. They will need to know a little bit about your job, including:

  • The size of your lawn
  • A description of the terrain, including slopes, narrow or hard to access areas, and other details that may affect the price.
  • Any related services you may need, such as weeding, weed spraying, edging and fertilisation.

It's better to get quotes per job than per hour, since an experienced lawn mowing service with up-to-date equipment will be faster than a less experienced service. If you are given a "per hour" quote, get back to the service and ask them for a more specific job price based on their previous experience. If you want your lawn to be the envy of your neighbourhood, ask for references. A lawn mowing service that is proud of its work will always be glad to provide you with them and may even invite you to drive by a property they regularly mow and maintain.
