How much does a garage door cost and why is a garage door a wise home improvement? That depends on the size of your garage and the type of garage door you want. If the garage door faces the street, it might be a good idea to spend a little more on it because garage doors are large and can make a big difference to your streetscape. These are some of your garage door options and some prices you can expect to pay.
There are several types of garage doors to choose from. Choose one that suits your purposes, but also looks good:
Most roller doors are made from aluminium or steel. Tilt doors are also often made from aluminium or steel, but can also be made from timber. Sectional doors can be made from aluminium or steel, but can be custom made from timber. While aluminium may not be as stylish as timber, remember aluminium doors come in a wide range of colours and styles and can be as good looking as a timber garage door.
Other designs are available as well. For example, you may not want a solid garage door. A slatted garage door will probably need to be custom made for you, but gives a sense of openness and is as secure as a solid door.
The cost of a garage door will be one consideration, but take a look at your existing garage door from the sidewalk. How far away is it? If it's close to the road, it may be a good idea to spend more on a more attractive garage door. If it's further away, an aluminium door may be ideal because they come in colours that can complement the colours of your house.
After you've looked at your existing garage door from the sidewalk or road, think about what type of garage door you need. If the garage door is close to the road, you may want to have garage doors custom made for you or choose a segmented door. Either one will be an attractive feature and can actually add to the cost of the house should you decide to sell.
If the garage door is further away, consider looking at aluminium garage doors. They can be tilt doors, roller doors or segmented doors. Which one would complement your house design? If a fence hides your garage door, tilt or roller doors may be ideal because they can't be seen from the road.
Choosing the right garage door for your property can be a difficult decision. Should you get a roller door, a tilt door or a sectional door? Any of them can be motorised, but which one is right for your property? A roller door is a good choice if you need to park the car close to the garage because it doesn't have to be tilted. Sectional doors can also open up and don't require extra space like tilt doors. Doors that open wide require extra space to open the doors, but they can be a stylish addition to your home, especially if they are close to the road and are a visual part of the home exterior.
Garage doors that open wide are usually custom made and may cost more to supply and install than prefabricated doors.

If you choose sectional doors, you may be amazed by the variety available. Get quotes from several companies to view their styles and find a price that suits you. Some sectional doors are made from Colorbond and come in a variety of colours. Others may have windows, either opaque or clear and the windows can be on the side or the top of the garage door.
Timber garage doors can cost more, but may be perfect for your property. Western Red Cedar is a popular choice, but Australian timbers are also available. They are not necessarily custom made and many garage door suppliers have them in stock.
How large a garage door do you need? A single garage door is 2.4 metres wide by 2.1 metres high. If you have two cars, a double garage door is 4.8 metres wide and 2.1 metres high. Of course, a double door is going to cost more, but it won't be twice the cost of a single door.
Those are standard sizes, but other sizes are also available. Some suppliers can make doors up to 3.1 metres in height and widths up to 3.4 metres wide for a single car or 5.5 metres wide for a double door. You can also choose two single doors with an upright between them so they can open separately.
Price is always a consideration when you're buying a garage door. They range in price from $450 to $5000, but it's best to have the door professionally installed because they are bulky and not easy to install. These prices are approximate prices for supply and installation of different types of garage doors:

If you can't find a standard garage door for your home, you may have to choose a custom made garage doors. Some suppliers have custom garage doors in a variety of styles or you may have to have a door made for you. A supplier's custom door will probably be less expensive than a door built by a cabinet maker and they will be able to install it for you.
The final choice is a garage door opener. They can be handy when you drive home in the rain and don't want to get soaked when you open the door. Garage door openers vary in price:
The price will depend on the quality of the door opener and how many remotes it comes with. It may be worth spending more to get a quiet garage door opener and one that has more than one remote controller.
