Boost your home security with these new technologies

Last Updated Sep 14, 2018 · Written by Rob Schneider

Home security just keeps getting better as new technologies emerge and improvements are made. What are some of the new technologies available today? Some have been with us for awhile, but many people aren't yet aware of them. Others are new and emerging and may stop home invaders in their tracks.

  1. Smart cameras
  2. Video doorbells
  3. Smart lights
  4. Security doors and windows
  5. Why you need motion detectors and lights at the sides of your home
  6. Why you need a home security system

Smart cameras

One new technology is the smart camera. Why is it so smart? It will only activate when it detects motion in or outside the home. Then it will record what it sees and you can watch in real time from wherever you happen to be.alt

While it might be disconcerting to see someone breaking into your home, you will have visual proof of who they are and can report the incident to the police, who will also know who to look for. Thieves will not want to know a smart camera is watching their activities, so you may want to remind them by placing a poster outside your house saying "A smart camera is watching you" or something like that.

Video doorbells

What is a video doorbell? It is a doorbell with a video camera attached to it. You always know who is at your door when you're at home and if a home invader comes to your door, they will probably ring your doorbell first to make sure no one is at home. A video doorbell with take a video of them and if they do enter your home, you will have the proof you need that they entered your home.alt

You may want to combine a video doorbell with motion sensor cameras inside your house. Motion sensor cameras will activate when they detect motion, but you can turn them off when you and your family are at home. Just remember to activate them when no one will be at home and they will detect intruders and monitor their activities.

Smart lights

You've gone on holidays, but you want your home to look occupied. How can you do it when you're thousands of miles away? Smart lights are WiFi enabled and apps are available to allow you to either set the lights to go on at a certain time or you can turn lights on and off from a distance.alt

Smart lights are the perfect way to look like you're at home even when you're not. For example, you can turn on bathroom or bedroom lights from a distance and home intruders will think someone is at home. You can also program an app to turn on porch or living room lights after dark. If you combine automated lighting with manual lighting, intruders will stop in their tracks because they will think someone is in the house.

Security doors and windows

Security doors and windows deter thieves because they know they can't get through them without great effort and they don't want to be seen trying to break into a home. Read How Much Do Security Screens Cost? to find out how much a security door will cost.alt

The 5 best home security ideas to protect your home mentions security windows. It's worth mentioning that security windows don't have to be ugly. Some are very stylish and locks are available for the inside of the home that make opening a window impossible from outside the home.

Why you need motion detectors and lights at the sides of your home

Home invaders like to go undetected. If they can't get inside the home quickly from the front of the home, they will go to the sides of the home where they can hide in darkness. Motion detectors can be attached to lights on the sides of your home and when the motion detector notices movement, it will activate the lights. A neighbourhood dog might turn on the lights, but if a home invader has lights shining on them, they will leave as quickly as possible. They know the lights will attract neighbours who will be able to identify them.

Motion detectors and lights have been available for some time, but many people are not aware they exist. They can be the perfect way to protect the sides or back of your house and if you take home security seriously, they are a must have item.

Why you need a home security system

Home security systems used to be run by private companies. Today, you can have a home security system on a smartphone and if you want a private company, you can connect them to your home security system. That may be a smart move because home security experts monitor homes 24/7 and you may not be able to when you're at work or on holidays.alt

Home security systems may have several components:

  • CCTV cameras to monitor activities inside or outside the home. Read Installing a CCTV System for more information about how to do a DIY installation.
  • Smartphones can do more than turn on lights. Cameras can monitor activities and home security systems are available for smartphones that can do much more. You can also give a security company access to a smartphone app and they can monitor activities around the house when you're at work or on holidays
  • Motion detectors can be installed inside the house or outside. We mentioned motion detectors that turn on lights on the sides, front or back of the house, but they can also activate cameras so you can identify intruders.
  • Security doors and windows will stop home invaders in their tracks. They will look for another home that's easier to access.

As mentioned above, some of these home security technologies have been with us for some time, but many people are not aware of them. Video doorbells and smart cameras that only activate when motion is detected are newer technologies. You may not want to make your home a fortress, but choose home security systems that will protect your home when you are at work or on holidays. They no longer are expensive and you can add to the home security system as your budget allows.
