This home in Queensland has not only had a major home improvement but it has been physically moved on its block with a new part of the house built underneath it. These before and after photos really capture the complete overhaul the house has had and shows how an older house got a new lease on life.
This project took 8 months to completion carried out by River City Home Improvements. The house, a beautiful old Queenslander, was moved forward and lifted on the block, and then needed some extensive TLC to make a fresh modern home.
The original house was built in the very early 1900’s. The owners had two land titles and decided to move the house to the front block by about 50m to sell off the rear block. In order to move it the house was raised and placed on the back of a truck, moved forward, raised again and then restumped. The original house was only approximately 500mm off the ground so it has to be raised quite a bit. The materials used to build the new part of the house were treated timber for framing and factory made Vj’s for walls and outdoor cladding.
The challenges of the project included trying to blend the old house with the new. The original house was quite old and crooked, making it difficult to produce straight lines with a flawless look to meld into the new house. In particular, moving the entry door to the front of the house was challenging to blend it together and level all the flooring.
The house also had built a new kitchen which became a main focus of the house with its custom-made Caesarstone benchtop. Also new was a master bedroom with a new ensuite and walk in robe with a bathroom made from an original bedroom, making a unique addition to the house. The front stairs were also added to the front of the house to create a grand entry. Outside there was a retaining wall at the back of the house, driveway, and fence for privacy with an electronic gate.
Blending the old house with the new was at times extremely difficult, River City Home Improvements have a team of carpenters, apprentices, and labourers in Brisbane that could manage the whole job.
Before building extensions underneath a house it’s important to consider making sure it is raised above legal height. Garry from River City also says to make sure:
