These six DIY hacks can be a start towards thinking outside the box and discovering clever ways to make inexpensive home improvements. It's surprising how inexpensive these DIY hacks can be and they don't require council approval because they are inexpensive hacks that do not affect the structural integrity of a building.
We are often told a product has one use, but some products can be used for things you never imagined they could be used for.
Before you throw out an old wooden ladder, have another look at it and you will probably find dozens of uses for it. All it might need is a little cleaning and some paint and you can use a wooden ladder in the bathroom, the garden or even in the garage.
Some wooden ladders have round step treads. These can be perfect as towel racks in the bathroom. They can simply be installed in the bathroom or attached to the wall. If you attach them to the wall, remember to give them enough space to hang the towels. Use a good waterproof paint and your wooden ladder towel racks will beat anything you can find at a hardware store.
Other wooden ladders have flat steps. What could be more perfect in the garden? Attach the ladder to a fence or just use a stepladder as a place to install pot plants. The pot plants will give the garden a colourful display and the ladder will be like a vertical garden, but not nearly as expensive as a vertical garden might be. They can also be perfect for climbing plants. You may have to help the plants along, but even veggies like peas or beans can climb the ladder and make picking them off much easier.
Think of other things you can use an old wooden ladder for. For example, a ladder can be perfect for display purposes in any room of the house. You may have to widen the treads for some things, but there are dozens of ways to use them for display purposes indoors. In a child's room, they can make a delightful display area and can cheer up the room.
A wooden ladder has so many uses beyond being something to climb. An old wooden ladder should not be thrown away. Hang on to it and you will find something to do with it.
Need towel racks? Why not go out and find old door knobs to use as towel racks. They can be perfect in smaller bathrooms where a ladder might be too large. You can find interesting door knobs and mix and match them to create as many towel racks as you need.
In fact, old door knobs are often more elaborately designed than new door knobs. And they are often very inexpensive. Find them at salvage yards or perhaps even in a neighbourhood thrift store. You will have unusual towel racks that will be a delightful addition to the bathroom.

Drawers can be wonderful for display purposes or even for storage. Instead of throwing away a broken chest of drawers, think about ways you could use the drawers. All they need is some paint and you can attach them to a wall to use for display purposes. A set of drawers can be perfect for a bookcase. Just stack them on top of each other and you have a bookcase.
Old drawers can be perfect for storing things in the garage. Tools can be put in the drawers or you can hang them on the wall and put extra shelves in them for small tools.
And don't forget about uses in the house. You may have to do some work on them, but drawers can be used for storage purposes in the house as well. All it takes is a little paint and an old drawer can become a delightful storage or display piece.
Again, you may need to add shelves, but an old drawer can be perfect for a display cabinet.
Shower curtain rods don't necessarily have to be used for their original purpose. Even an old one you were thinking of throwing away can be spruced up with some sandpaper and paint. What might you use an old shower curtain rod for?
For one thing, you can use it in the shower for extra storage space. Just hang it close to the wall and use it for hanging items that have strings attached, like loofahs and back scrubbers. Just hang a hook on them and they will be at your fingertips.
You might find a use for an old shower curtain rod in the backyard, too. They can be perfect for hanging plants, for example. Instead of having a series of fairly expensive hangers for the plants, a single shower curtain rod can hold several hanging plants and you may only have to pay for two hangers instead of six or more.
You might have other ideas for an old shower curtain rod, so don't throw it away. You might kick yourself when you think of a use for it. It doesn't take up much space in the garage, so hang on to it until you find a use for it.
Crown moulding is used on ceilings, but is that the only use for it? If you have a lot of high heeled shoes, it can be an ideal way to store your shoes. Crown moulding is often angled to fit the space between the walls and the ceiling. The angle is perfect for shoes, especially high heeled shoes. A length of crown moulding doesn't cost much and can be fixed to the wall to hold light objects like high heels.
Not only is crown moulding an inexpensive way to hang high heels, it can be a stylish way to hang them, too. Get crown moulding that has a stylish design and hang one or two lengths in the closet or walk in closet.
Shoe organisers are great for shoes, but they have other uses as well. Often, the pantry is filled with small items that take up valuable space. Hang a shoe organiser on the pantry door and store those items in the shoe organiser. Because it is made of plastic, you can see them at a glance. A shoe organiser is inexpensive and can easily be hung on the inside of a pantry door. You'll be glad you found another use for a shoe organiser when you find what you want at a glance.
A shoe organiser can be used for candy, spices and anything that will fit into the pocket. Because shoe organisers are designed for large shoes, you will be surprised by the number of things you can store in them. You won't be rummaging around for those smaller items and can save the shelves for larger items.
