A stonemason is someone that is involved in working with masonry materials and stone. They prepare and lay hard and soft stone, marble, concrete blocks or slabs and other materials that are involved in building or repairing stone structures, walls or monumental masonry (an example of monumental masonry is stone work for cemeteries or ornamental carvings on stone).

What Stonemasons Do

  • estimate the amount of materials required for the job either through taking measurements or reading blueprints or work orders
  • cut and shape stone or other masonry materials using hand tools or power tools as required
  • cut and polish marble or granite that is being used in construction, such as kitchen benchtops
  • design and carve monumental masonry – things such as lettering on stone or the base of a statue
  • build walls using stone and masonry slabs
  • lay paving or marble or granite floor tiles
  • repair stone facades
  • repair stone work or old or heritage buildings such as churches, heritage-listed homes etc

Stonemasons can also build things such as retaining walls, fireplaces, water features, stairways, feature walls, barbecues and chimneys.

Hiring a Professional

Stonemasons should be qualified and, in some states, they need to have a license.  When hiring a professional to carry out your project, also ensure that they have the correct insurances if your project is fairly large.  Agree to the price of the job of the job before any work starts and, if possible, look at examples of their previous work to ensure that they have the experience to do what you need.
