What is Scaffolding?

Scaffolding is the temporary framework that is used to support people and building materials while construction or building repairs are in process.  It usually consists of steel, aluminium or another form of metal, although wooden or bamboo components are sometimes used.  Scaffolding comes in different sizes and types including small, large, mobile or custom-made and can be used by a variety of professionals, from painters to builders.

Using Professionals

As building work is dangerous by nature, only qualified professionals should erect and dismantle scaffolding.  The scaffolding professional will need a Scaffolding Certificate if carrying out work that is over four metres in height.  If the scaffolding is less than four metres, the Certificate is not required but the professional should still work safely as they have a duty of care.

Professionals regularly maintain and service their equipment; however, when delivering scaffolding components to the site, the professional should always inspect the scaffolding to ensure that it is free of any faults or defects, especially in the welds.

Ensure that the professional is reputable and that they are willing to give you a price estimate or quote before any work commences.
