If you have a tiled or timber floor and would like to add the look of carpet without the permanence then rugs may be a great choice. Rugs are made in exactly the same way as carpets most of the time, except for handmade rugs, which are usually a lot more expensive than machine made rugs but have the advantage of superior quality.
Installing rugs in tiled or timber rooms can help with the retention of heat in winter and can also help with the acoustics of a room, dampening echoes and absorbing sound. Rugs can even be laid over existing carpet to provide a complementing or contrasting feature. Rugs come in all colours, patterns and textures and can suit any home décor from traditional to ultra modern and minimalist. They are great for making a space appear less “empty” and they are actually classified as a soft furnishing, like window coverings are.
This is because some carpets are designed for heavier wear than others and also because carpets will not look exactly the same as they do in the showroom when they are in your home. Retailers should have a lighting box for you to view the carpet in different light conditions, or alternatively, provide you with a sample to take home.
When buying carpet, make sure that the quote given by the retailer includes the cost of underlay and installation as well as the carpet itself. To make a quote more accurate, retailers may measure your room or you can give them the measurements yourself, depending on what you prefer.
