The term “hardware” generally refers to items such as the following:
  • hinges
  • lever sets
  • doorknobs
  • locks
  • fasteners (screws, nails, bolts etc)
  • bathroom fittings
  • ropes and chains

Traditionally hardware is sold in hardware stores, and while it encompasses all of the above and more, it can also include items such as hand and power tools, paints, electrical products, plumbing products, garden products and timber and timber-related products.

If you require hardware on your project, and it is likely that you will, then it may be better to get a professional(such as a builder, plumber or other relevant professional) to purchase the required products for you, especially if it is a large project.  This is because they will get what is known as “trade prices”.  If you are completing a project yourself, retailers will aim to give you the best prices possible.  Also look out for sales and special offers.

The Hardware Professional

Hardware professionals have access to a wide range of products (sometimes many thousands!) and have specialized knowledge to help you choose the products that are most suitable for your job.
