Water Saving Tips:
Take a shower rather than a bath.
Collect rain water for use in the garden.
Don’t run the tap whilst cleaning your teeth.
Only boil as much water as you need when making drinks etc.
Don’t leave taps (faucets) dripping - replace any worn washers.
Only wash full loads in washing machines and dishwashers.
If you have a dehumidifier or air conditioning unit which collects the water this can be used to water houseplants as can water from defrosting a fridge or freezer. This is distilled water.
Water remaining after boiling eggs can be cooled and used to water plants as this is high in nutrients as is the dirty water taken from a fish tank.
If you drink tap water and normally run the tap for a while to ensure the water is cold, collect this initial supply either in your kettle or to water plants etc., Alternatively, instead of waiting for it to run cold keep a jug of water in the fridge.
Wash vegetables in a bowl or sink rather than under a running tap.
Don’t over-water your lawn as this encourages the roots to find the surface and can weaken growth.
Sprinklers are wasteful as they use as much water in one hour as a family of four uses in one day.
Fit a water saving device in your toilet cistern or replace it with a modern one as these use less water for each flush.
Hot Water Systems often need to run a lot of cold water before the hot comes through, as it has to run from the site of the Hot Water System through to the tap, which may mean going through a lot of pipe. Therefore, every time I turn on the tap, I either fill my watering can with the cold water, or fill spare bottles of water to use during the day for kettles, etc. You could fill saucepans or put it in the washing machine too. It is amazing how much could run away before the required hot comes through.
We collect the shower water that is run before the shower gets warm enough to get in. This water is dumped in the washing machine. We also collect the condensation water from our A/C and use that in the washing machine too. I know we've saved thousands of litres using these methods.
In your Bathrooms:
Leaky toilets, clogged showerheads and slow drains are common problems in the bathroom we can help with.
Installing new basins, taps, toilets, baths and showers.
Unblocking drains.
Fixing leaking showers and shower bases, unblocking toilets and toilet plumbing.
Toilet cistern problems.
These helpful hints should help keep the plumbing in your bathroom running efficiently.
About 40 percent of all the water used in the household is used in the bathroom so it makes sense to conserve water wherever you can. What are some ways that you can use to save water?
Fix the Drips
A leaking tap or shower head can waste about two litres of water per hour. This may not sound like much, it can add up to nearly 20,000 litres of water a year. This is per tap, so the more leaks you have, the more water you're using! If your toilet is leaking, this can waste as much as 16,000 litres of water a year
Once a week run hot water down the drain to help keep it free-flowing.
Repair leaky faucets to avoid further damage to the fixtures and faucets.
Basins and showers should be fitted with strainers that catch hair and soap chips.
Clean the strainers regularly.
Showerhead Maintenance
To remove unsightly mineral deposits on your shower head, put one cup of vinegar in a plastic bag and place it over the shower head.
Hold it in place with a twist tie and let stand overnight. In the morning, remove the bag and wipe off the mineral deposits with a damp cloth.
Showerheads develop uneven spray when the holes become clogged with mineral deposits from the water, gently clean the outlet holes of the showerhead using a thin wire.
Flush the head with clean water.
Toilets
Do not use your toilet as a wastebasket.
Do not flush facial tissue, sanitary products or diapers as they do not dissolve and can clog the lines.
Keep a trash container in each bathroom.
Testing a Toilet for Leaks
Remove the cistern lid and check the water level in the tank to be sure that the water is not overflowing by way of the overflow pipe (the pipe in the middle of the tank).
If water is running into the overflow pipe, adjust the water inlet (fill) valve until the water stops approximately 25mm below the top of the overflow pipe (there may be a water level mark stamped on the back of the tank).
Test the outlet (flush) valve mechanism by putting a few drops of food colouring into the tank.
Check the bowl after 15 minutes, if the water has changed colour, the outlet (flush) valve mechanism is leaking and may need to be repaired or replaced.
Cleaning an Aerator
Low water pressure from the aerator (spout) or water sprays from the aerator (spout) are usually caused by lime build-up and sediment blocking the small openings inside the aerator head. Clean the head using the following steps:
By hand, carefully unscrew the aerator from the faucet turning counter clockwise. If it will not unscrew, wrap the jaws of your pliers with masking tape and loosen the aerator with the pliers. Continue by hand.
Take aerator or spray head apart
Use a small brush dipped in vinegar to remove sediment.
Reassemble the unit and screw back on to the faucet.
In your Kitchen:
Taps and garbage disposers are often the culprits when it comes to problems in the kitchen we can help with.
Installing new appliances like dishwashers, garbage disposals and fridges with running water. Installing new sinks and taps; clearing drain blockages and garbage disposal blockages.
