We are a family owned business managed by Biz and Lindsay Nicolson, and their three children: Hanna, Sam and Isobelle. The Taz Wild Plants nursery is situated in Northern Tasmania’s beautiful Fingal Valley under the watchful eye of the Ben Lomond mountain range.
SERVICES
The family has been growing Tasmanian natives for thirty years, but our passion is for plants found on “Bonneys Plains”, our 2300 hectare sheep grazing property. It is similar to a privately owned national park and serves as a vast treasure chest for hardy grassland, wetland and mountainous species. Over half of Tasmania’s plants can be found in this district.
Taz Wild Plants was born from the need to source hardy plants to grow in the garden, farm shelter-belt plantings, and to supply our Tasmanian re-vegetation and reforestation work. Initially trees and shrubs were grown. However, there appeared a need for smaller plants and grassland species that are spectacular in flower. From here we expanded to cater to the demand for high quality foods made with local plants.

How can I use native plants
The simplicity of growing native plants is realised by their low maintenance. They are largely compost, chemical and pest free in terms of growing requirements. We have quality plants for every occasion including topiary, advanced plants and lawn grasses. Tasmanian plants can be used for a variety of garden styles including:
modern and chic
traditional formal, cottagetopiary
lawn grasses
exotic (such as Balinese, Japanese etc.)
water gardens
natural garden schemes
containers and potted plants
hedging, native shrubs are ideal for distinctive hedging, either formal or informal
To present the beauty of native plants we have created a careful selection of plants and their forms over many years. Our criteria is based on:
Flora for Fauna: Attracting animal life (like birds and butterflies) to your garden. This is the essence of Taz Wild’s “Living in Harmony” motto.
Landscaping Values: Australian native plants offer a new and unique variety of shapes and textures to the gardener.
Water Wise: Grow a low maintenance garden in harmony with dry Australian conditions. A well-designed native garden will better survive a drought.
Floristry and Cut Flowers: Stunning shapes, colours and textures, along with a profusion of flowers make for new and exciting flower arrangements.
Why choose Taz Wild Plants
Fingal is one of Tasmania’s harshest environments, only the toughest plants survive. Heavy frosts during winter are normal (to –8°C) and summers are long, hot and dry. Annual rainfall in the district is below 500mm. The plants we grow are some of the hardiest available, coping well with diverse conditions.
