Welcome To Edge Building & Design
Edge Building and Design is a new name (July 2003) for an established building outfit.
D & S King have been building in the Geelong and coastal regions as registered building contractors since March 1988, Prior to this David has been involved in building as a subcontractor and various other ares of building since 1978. So you see certainly a new name not a new builder.
The name Edge building and Design is now our focus. To remain at the forefront of contemporary home design to create individual experiences for individual people. Having built for a vast range of clients we appreciate your needs are specific to you and you alone. Our challenges are to design and build to suit your requirements and budget.
Building a contemporary home should not limit the longevity of design therefore we endeavor not simply to build modern homes but rather tomorrows classics.
At Edge we appreciate that building can be a huge undertaking. We endeavor to take your dream from "concept to reality" step by step.
David and shirlee King enjoy being in the boutique building industry and do not compare themselves with large volume builders. Rather we prefer to think of clients as long time associates, yes your business is important to us today! Design: As contemporary homebuilders our first focus is design, at Edge we have been concentrating on minimalist contemporary design for coastal and city areas.
You can’t simply paint the front door red or one wall purple to create a modern home.
Although many try, much more is involved.
At Edge your experience starts with design. Each home is individually designed with the following in mind:

Realization of your home or investment property
Location and Site Development:
Location is important therefore we are happy to inspect your site prior to purchase. Why? Rescode issues along with 5 star requirements come into play. Not all sites are suitable to all homes. But, what if you already have your site? Don’t worry we will still inspect to see the best possible way to develop it, with what you have in mind.
Different areas have different requirements, some areas have planning restrictions even if planning permits are not required the earlier we work through this the better as this can be time consuming in some areas.
We can also assist by arranging Landscape design if this is a requirement.
All the above is part of our concept to reality approach to building.
Orientation:
Many larger builders develop set plans, the problem is not all blocks are the same; therefore it is necessary to locate or orientate a home correctly. New Five Stare principles have a large play in this, however it isn't practical to turn your back on a good view simply to please Five Star requirements. Once again this is where good design comes in. Whether you are building with us or not in contemporary design you cant afford to overlook orientation.
5 Star efficiency:
5 Star has brought many changes to the building industry. A greater emphasis on insulation along with window design, use of eaves, floor coverings all come into the equation. At present different ratings are acceptable for different design frames. An example of this is the difference between building on a slab verses building on Timber sub floor, the use of Solar hot water verses the use of rain water tanks supplying water to areas like the toilet systems in the home. Such areas are important; as they not only enable you to obtain building approval they also stay with you as long as you keep your new home. Although it costs more initially, over time the costs should flow back by cheaper running costs and primarily a more comfortable home for you and your family.
Your Individual Requirements:
Now we reach the most important part “You.” The design of your new home should reflect you! That is why we spend time simply talking to you, getting to know you and what is important to you in a home. It may be your passion is cooking so the kitchen is your domain why should cooking be a burden a well-designed kitchen can be a place to enjoy.
Or perhaps after the rigors of the week you look forward to relaxing in a hot bath or even a spa, if time is an issue how about a large luxurious shower designed simply to pamper you every day. Do you enjoy music or watching a good movie. We can accommodate all your needs. Spend some time with our electrician and find out what is available to you. Bedrooms, shelving systems, patios, alfresco areas, courtyards, garaging, lighting, polished floors, tiles and paint colors the list goes on and on. “Too Much” No it’s all fun, design well, build well and enjoy well.
The possibilities are endless. However the bank balance isn't always so flexible.
With our concept to reality approach please don’t be offended if we ask what your budget is straight away, why waste time designing something that has little chance of reality. Better to work to a target figure right from the start.
