Welcome to Silver Fern Building
I started my building career as soon as I left school. I completed a year long building course at polytechnic before starting my apprenticeship. In New Zealand the apprenticeships are much more involved as we built timber framed houses from start to finish from a bare block of land.
To outline what is involved: - Set out the foundation of the house with survey pegs
- Box out the foundation and pour the slabs
- Erect the timber framing
- Pitch the roof
- Sheet the roof in colourbond
- Line the outside walls with cladding
- Install the windows to close the house in
- Insulate from the inside all the external walls of the house
- Line the walls with plasterboard (the finish of this method is the same as with brick and render homes)
- Line and insulate the ceilings – this is installed from the top of the roof cavity.
- Install all door jambs and doors including door hardware
- Lay timber flooring where specified
- Fit all skirtings and architraves
- Install all white melamine to wardrobes, linen cupboards and pantries
At the stage the house would be painted and ready to hand over.
In Australia you would need to organise about 8 different contractors to do this e.g. concreters, roof carpenter, roof plumber, 2nd fix carpenter, window installer.
