Design
I will come to you with photographic examples of my work, a variety of pattern books and more than 450 glass samples. We will spend as much time as you need to discuss styles (Australiana, Contemporary, Traditional, Federation, Edwardian, Victorian, Art Deco, Prairie, etc.), and glass colours and textures. I will provide you with a full-size drawing of the pattern and a quote that sets out in detail all material and construction costs.
Construction
Materials
I use the best quality materials to construct your new piece. Glass manufacturers includeSpectrum, Kokomo and Wissmach from the USA, Desag from Germany and Pilkington's from Australia. I use Australian made Castlead lead calmes and AusAlloy solders and Venture copper foils and reinforcing strips. Incidental items like putties, patinas and solder fluxes and irons are all from quality manufacturers.
My Labour
I love what I do. I derive tremendous satisfaction from the whole process from conception, to design, to construction, to installation. I take great pride that my work will add beauty and value to your home. For these reasons I will always strive to achieve the highest level of workmanship. I believe that all my clients deserve no less.
Installation
Once your leadlight panel is ready for installation I will arrange a suitable day and time with you. I will remove the existing glass and install the new leadlight panel in its place. I will also take away the old glass (unless you wish to keep it). Please note that delivery and the first two hours installation is provided at no charge.
Other pieces such as lampshades, clocks, mirrors and mosaics are also delivered free of charge. Please note that for swag (ceiling) fixtures that are going to be wired in to your home/business electrical wiring you will need a licensed electrician to install the lampshade. All lampbases supplied by A Drop of Glass are certified and approved by the relevant authorities.
Frequently Asked Questions
How Much Will It Cost?
This is a difficult question to answer as there are a number of elements to be taken into consideration - the size of the piece - the design (the more complex the design the more hours spent constructing the piece) - glass colours (clear glasses tend to be cheaper $7 - $20/sq ft; reds, yellows, pinks tend to more expensive $25 - $40/sq ft; blues, greens, purples, etc $15 - $30/sq ft).
A front door sidelight of two panels totalling approximately 1.8metres x 0.35 metres would cost around $500 (a simple design, perhaps incorporating some bevels) up to around $1000 (a design with use of coloured glass and perhaps a bird and/or floral elements).
How Long Will It Take?
Depending on my workload and timing/product availability with suppliers a leadlight panel usually takes 5 - 7 weeks from initial discussion to installation. Repair timeframes are usually negotiable (around 1 - 2 weeks). I do not do on site repairs. It's no good for my back and I believe you don't get as good a quality job.
Lampshades can take anywhere from 1 week to several months depending on the workload, product availability, size of the lampshade and design complexity.
Why Do A Drop of Glass Lampshades Cost More Than an Imported One?
Attention to Detail
I am very particular when making a copperfoil lampshade. All glass pieces are cut to match the original pattern as closely as possible. I grind the edges of each glass piece. This has two aspects - design accuracy and adhesion of the copper foil. A ground edge allows the foil to gain stronger contact with the glass piece.
If you inspect the copperfoiled lampshades available in lighting shops you will see that many of the solder seams (especially on the inside of the lampshade) are flat. I construct rounded seams on both the outside and the inside of all the lampshades that I make. Rounded seams give far greater strength to a lampshade than flat seams.
I reinforce the top and bottom openings of all my lampshades with copper wire. This further strengthens the lampshade.
I also attach a lamp spider to any lampshade that is for a swag fitting as well as any base mounted lampshade with a bottom opening of 14" (35cm) or more. A lamp spider is soldered into the internal seams of the lampshade. When the lampshade is hung or mounted the weight of the lampshade is not carried on the vase cap/top opening but is more spread throughout the lampshade.
I am confident that any lampshade that I make for you will last for many, many years. When you buy a lampshade from A Drop of Glass you are buying a family heirloom.
