WHAT IS RISING DAMP?
Rising damp, also called Salt Damp, is caused by the rise of moisture being drawn up into the base of the wall through capillary action.
Wherever there are moisture absorbent materials such as brick, mortar, or renders in contact with the ground then the moisture will rise through them unless there is a barrier in the form of a damp course. The dampness will continue to rise unless treated.
SYMPTOMS
On Internal Walls
• Paint peeling off the wall
• Wallpaper lifts and moisture stains on the wall
• Plaster bubbles and flakes off
• Skirting boards rot
On External Walls
• Mortar joints and brickwork crumble
• White powder stains appear on brickwork
• Render flakes away
TREATMENT
There are two methods of chemical injection:
1) Pressure injection: the insertion of the damp course fluid in to walls under pressure, leading to saturation of the mortar joints and solid bricks
2) Gravity Feed: This system allows the damp course to drip in to the wall via covered tubing. It is drip fed until the wall is saturated. This method is used on very dense thick stone walls.
PROCEDURES
1. Internal Walls: skirting boards and affected plaster is removed. External walls: affected render is removed
2. Pressure Injection or Gravity Feed Injection along floor/ground level will be done through pre-drilled holes
3. Re-plastering or re-rendering is carried out approximately 3 weeks later to allow walls to dry completely. A salt retarder is added to the plaster or render mix to prevent moisture in walls.
4. Skirting boards are refitted
