Mortars in brickwork fade and fret for many reasons. In older brickwork mortar has no cement and consisted of lime and sand. Once the ‘closed cell’ finish achieved with the jointing tool or trowel wears away, the mortar joint no longer repells water but absorbs it. This of course further weakens the mortar and begins the deterioration cycle of bricks, mortar, wire ties, etc. In newer brickwork fretting mortar is generally caused by incorrect sand-cement-lime proportions and also an aggressive climate.
Both old and recent brickwork mortars generally take many years to deteriorate but once begun the deterioration is rapid.
Until our Mortar Extrusion System was developed in 1972 the only method of restoration of mortar joints was by pushing mortar into the joint from a trowel. There are many drawbacks with this method, a few of which are as follow:
- A complete fill is difficult to achieve.
- Mortar is smeared over brick face.
- Acid wash on completion is generally essential. This helps to cause the deterioration cycle once again.
- Difficult to find good tradesmen.
- Very labour intensive with the end result having the appearance of ‘repaired’ rather than ‘just laid’.
Our Mortar Extrusion System overcomes all of these problems, while still being very cost efficient. We believe many people are aware of having a mortar joint problem but are reluctant to address it because of the problems above.

If there is a schedule that we agree to then we stick to it. Providing the job is of a reasonable size we will do a sample panel.

Further to our recent discussion in relation to this laboratory's recommendation for the repair of faulty mortar joints and the procedures used by your organisation for the same, we considered your comments to resolve any problems that our standard recommendations may have caused, to accommodate your method of repointing, which we approve, we have expended the text of our reports adding the following:
"If the work is to be contracted out to 'Brickwork Restoration' company, which specialises in such work, the above recommendations may be varied to accommodate the technique of repointing developed by this company.
Their 'Mortar Extrusion System' for the repair work involves the use of a specially formulated mortar, which when compared with an ordinary mortar, claimed to form superior bond between the surface of the old mortar and the brick.
For this reason their system requires the replacement of only 15 to 20 mm of the old mortar, which as I understand, they guarantee will ensure the long term durability of the mortar joints."
