ABOUT US
Hortulus is a specialist landscape design and construction company based in Port Douglas, Far North Queensland. We specialise in the creation and development of large domestic landscapes and small commercial developments that incorporate the unique features of the tropics.
From Sydney to Darwin and the pacific region, Hortulus has the expertise to design, manage and construct landscapes. We also offer a premium garden management service when the landscape is complete and a consultancy service for those who want to do it themselves.
We have a range of abilities from landscape design, horticulture, pool and water feature design, planning, environmental consulting, through to all aspects of construction. Our professional team have produced many gardens in the Port Douglas and Cairns regions that are testament to the quality of our work.
DESIGN
The idea of Australia being an old country and young nation allows us to explore modern design philosophies using not only a palette of "Tropical plants" but also the new and exciting palette of locally native plants from the Top end of Australia and even our close neighbours in the Pacific bio region.
Architecture is one of the most important elements of a garden. In a climate where we all desire to be outside so much the relationship between our "built environment" and the landscape says a lot about how we like to live, allowing us to feel at ease in the spaces we create. The biggest compliment to a designer of space is to see the space used and appreciated whether the user knows it or not!
Our basic design philosophy stems from the management of many gardens. A garden must not only be aesthetically pleasing but practical to maintain. With high labour costs, and often low knowledge of garden staff, considerations of how a garden is going to be managed is often the most important aspect of the planning process.
CONSTRUCTION
Our landscape construction team works closely with our designers to produce the best results in a practical design. With good knowledge of local materials and supplies the team can produce a great finished product from natural rockwork, paving, irrigation right through the landscape to soil mechanics and planting.
We are licensed by the Queensland building Services Authority
(No 1040489) and are active members of The Cairns Landscape Industries Cluster.
NURSERY
Wholesale Stock
We produce some of own stock at our nursery premises in Mossman 20 minutes north of Port Douglas. We specialise in growing rare exotic plants and native plants that are not readily available in the wholesale nursery industry. In particular we stock a number of unique Heliconia species as well as a range of gingers. Please enquire if you have any questions.
Advanced Stock
We currently stock a number of advanced Lipstick Palms, that range from 4m to 6m tall and have the striking red stems. All stock is well maintained and available to be dug and loaded readily. Other advanced stock includes Foxtail Palms, Black Palms and Coconut Palms.
Retail
We offer a local plant supply service for those who want to carry out the planting work themselves. This service involves sourcing your plants, delivery and even plant placement in the Cairns region if required.
