PERTH'S KING AND CLEAR, COMMITTED TO GREEN (excerpt from)
By Kim Ball
Dateline: 16th October 2007
With an increasing focus on being carbon neutral and ‘going green’, more and more people in Western Australia are choosing businesses with Green Stamp accreditation, said BSCAA WA executive director Ian Westoby. “There is a growing initiative from the general public to employ green stamp accredited domestic carpet cleaning services.”
He explained that looking after carpets is of growing interest to the public considering the significant investment they have made purchasing and laying carpet in their homes.
“The Green Stamp program was developed by people in industry and is overseen by government to encourage business owners and managers to better manage the environmental impact of their business.
“This includes what is done with waste water and securing chemicals in vans so they don’t tip and leak into the environment.
“We are currently working with the State Government to implement mandatory Green Stamp program accreditation for government cleaning tenders in WA,” Westoby added.
Two Perth-based businesses to recently gain Green Stamp certification are Aarow Carpet Cleaning and Kingston Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning.
Green Stamp coordinator Katherine Morison explained that to achieve accreditation both businesses needed to complete two levels of assessment.
“The first level relates to documentation,” Morison said.
“The operator is required to complete various operational policies and procedures including environmental policies regarding spills and a list of objectives to achieve in future operations.
“The second part of the accreditation process is a site or van inspection to ensure the policies and procedures are being implemented. This includes that the chemical manual is in the van and spill procedures, chemical handling and storage requirements are being adhered to.
“We encourage certified members to use their Green Stamp accreditation in the marketing of their business and promote environmentally friendly practices with clients.”
Aarow Carpet Cleaning owner/operator Graeme Clear has been in the carpet cleaning industry for more than 10 years and is an enthusiastic advocate for the Green Stamp program.
Clear worked in a paint manufacturing workshop before starting his business which, he said, reinforced the emphasis he places on correct handling, usage and disposal of chemicals used in the carpet cleaning process.
“Going through the Green Stamp program accreditation process really helped with the set-up and fit out of my new van,” Clear said.
“As well as minimising the effect on the environment, the structures and procedures implemented have increased my productivity.
“I have organised my van so steam cleaning equipment is accessed via the back of the vehicle and dry cleaning equipment from the side. All chemicals are in containers to avoid spillage and relevant parts are easily accessible.”
Aarow Carpet Cleaning focuses on commercial carpet cleaning with about 20 per cent of business coming from domestic carpet cleaning, tile and curtain cleaning.
“I work a full week with regular and repeat customers being my main source of business,” related Clear.
“I recently completed training in order to expand the business to include cleaning upholstery, fabric, stone, ceramics and masonry.
“Over the years I have developed a network of contacts within the industry; we compare stories and work together to get better deals. It also means when I have too much work I can give contracts away to people in the industry that I know.”
