Design Methodology
In summary, we have a simple but highly successful design methodology:
1. Determine the owners' spatial and functional requirements, as well as taste preferences, budget and timetable, and wish list.
2. Determine Council and other authorities' requirements.
3. Resolve functional relationships and circulation patterns, with logical grouping of areas.
4. Maximise the good aspects and minimise any poor aspects of location, climate, topography. This covers environmentally sustainable development (ESD) and passive solar design principals.
5. Explore spatial relationships and building forms in the context of the streetscape, and if not a new building, complementing the shape of the existing building. Generate a solution of long term appeal and excitement.
6. Resolve finishes and details having regard to the owners' taste and the character of the new building or existing building being extended or altered.
The resulting design is unique to the owners and their particular site. It has an integrity arising from this analytical approach and consistency in selection of details and finishes. This contrasts with solutions in which a preconceived style or shape is imposed at the expense of function or suitability to the site.
Superficial ideas and elements are avoided.
We develop the design concept in small steps with owner participation in decision making. This ensures that the final product meets, and often exceeds the owners' expectations within the financial, physical, and regulatory constraints of the project.

Our practice has occupied our own premises in the heart of Balmain since 1983.
