If you have a lounge or other piece of furniture that may be looking a little worse for wear, why not consider re-upholstering it?  Upholsterers are able to repair a damaged piece of furniture or update it to suit a new decorating theme.  It is worth considering re-upholstering furniture if it is a well-known brand of high quality, or if the frame is well-made.  Re-upholstering a piece of furniture that is very well made structurally can easily add years to the life of the item.  The most common items of furniture that can be re-upholstered are lounge suites, recliners and dining chairs.

Materials

There are literally thousands of different materials that you can choose from when re-upholstering.  The material may be locally sourced or imported and includes leather, jacquard, suede, chenille, velvet, wool, and tartan, just to name a few.  Suede is very popular at the moment, with woven or knitted types available in a range of different fibres, both natural and manufactured.

As there is such a huge range of material available, it is easy to become overwhelmed by the choice.  To ensure that your re-upholstered furniture will fit in with the existing or planned decorating scheme for your home, it may be worth engaging the services of an interior decorator that will be able to provide you with good style advice.

Choosing a Upholsterer

When hiring a upholsterer, there are some things that you will need to consider.  Firstly, they should provide you with a free measure and quote.  The quote should include pick up and delivery, and be of a fixed price.  You should also ask to see some of their previous work.

Ensure that you are able to communicate well with your upholsterer, as it is important that they understand your requirements and are willing to work with you to ensure that you get exactly what you want.  The upholsterer should also be willing to guarantee the work that they perform.  However, they can only guarantee the upholstery work itself.  They cannot guarantee the components of the furniture such as the foam, fabric, springing or other items unless there is a manufacturer’s warranty.  Be sure to ask for the care labels for the fabric used so that you know how to keep the fabric looking its best.
