A well-maintained chimney increases the safety and efficiency of your flued heating system or open fireplace. This means that you will get more heat at a lower cost and lower risk to you and your family.
Chimneys and flues need to be cleaned as blockages (such as birds’ nests, rubble, or creosote) prevent the chimney or flue from ‘drawing’, filling the room with smoke. A buildup of creosote (a substance formed by solid fuel combustion) not only affects the performance of your flue or chimney, it can cause a fire hazard. The buildup, whether it occurs on the smoke shelf or chimney itself can ignite with a spark, causing a fire.
How often should chimneys and flues be cleaned? On an annual basis is ideal with chimneys being swept every one to three years, and flues cleaned yearly. As part of the maintenance program, a complete visual inspection should be performed, checking things such as its structural integrity, sizing, clearance, condition and compliance with local requirements.
