Pool fencing is a vital component of the home swimming pool, simply because of the safety that it provides. Every swimming pool needs to be adequately fenced. Read on to find out what you need to know.

There are many different types of pool fencing. Some of the most common ones include:

  • wrought iron
  • wood
  • vinyl
  • glass
  • Colorbond
  • mesh
  • aluminium
  • chain link

Considerations when Selecting Pool Fencing

When selecting your pool fencing, there are some factors that you will need to take into consideration. Some fences need a hard surface to be installed. Look for a fence that will give you privacy and cannot be climbed. Consider the look of the fence. You want it to blend in with the rest of your home, and not look out of place. Think about how much fencing your require, and what kind of warranty is being offered. Finally, consider your budget. Some fencing types are more expensive than others.

Pool Fencing Requirements and Regulations

Since 1991, strict regulations have been introduced regarding fencing for inground and aboveground pools ands spas. 1994 also saw the introduction of legislation that requires pools built before 1991 to be upgraded to provide effective safety barriers. Here is some nationwide pool fencing requirements. If you are unsure of anything, speak to the pool building professional or your local council.

  • fences and gates must be at least 1.2m tall
  • chain wire or mesh fences must be at least 1.8m tall with an additional angled section of 45cm
  • the area between the bottom of the fence and the ground must be no more than 100mm
  • any spaces between the vertical members of the fence, such as palings, must be no more than 100mm
  • gates must only open outward and they need to close and latch automatically
  • the gate latch must be 1.5m above the ground or 1.2m if the latch is reached over the fence
  • walls as part of the fence is allowable providing that doors and windows have self locking or latching devices at least 1.5m above floor level
  • paling fences are an acceptable part of the pool fence if they are at least 1.5m in height and any gates within the paling fence have self locking or latching devices also at least 1.5m above ground level
  • any material can be used for fencing as long as it is durable and has a reasonable life span when exposed to pool chemicals, water, and weather conditions

Installing Pool Fencing

When installing or considering installing pool fencing, always make sure that you get at least three quotes from three different companies. Remember that the cheapest quote is not necessarily the right one for you. The quote should include the cost of all materials as well as labour, estimated to the best of the company’s ability. Ensure that you feel confident with what the company is offering and that they will comply with all safety regulations. If a permit is required to install the fencing, the company should be able to assist you in obtaining one. Ask how long it will take for the fencing to be installed, and if there are any precautions that you should take before using the fence (such as concrete setting times, paint drying times etc).
