Cladding is a layer of material that covers the exterior of a building in order to protect the structure from outside elements such as wind, rain and fire.  Cladding does not just refer to weatherboard type products; it also refers to metal, brick and cement sheeting.  It can be installed on the walls or roof of a building.  Roof cladding is made from thicker steel and is capable of supporting roof traffic.  Roof cladding is generally installed by a roof plumber.

Cladding is not just used for aesthetic purposes – it can be used for insulation against noise and weather.  There also cladding systems available that specifically protect against fire damage.

Advantages of Cladding

Cladding can be used on all existing surfaces such as brick, fibro, timber and cement blocks.  It can even be installed over existing weatherboards.  It is available in a range of colours and, once installed, is practically maintenance-free.  Some types of cladding will need to be painted regularly, such as those made from timber.

If the cladding is installed and maintained according to the manufacturer’s instructions, it will be resistant to moisture, termites and fire.  However, you will still need to undertake regular pest control in order to protect the internal structure of your house. 

All types of cladding have a long life span, with warranties lasting for up to fifty years depending on the type of material.  It is easy to work with and quick to install, with the average house taking around two to five days to be completely cladded.
