Everything you need to know about finding a wall light supplier

Wall lights are considered more convenient to use than ceiling lights, since they usually switch on or off at the source, don’t cast shadows and provide mood or accent lighting.

Types of Wall Lights

Wall lights can shine up, down in a semi-circle or all around. There are several different types of wall lighting including:

Indoor Wall Lights

In order to choose from the vast array of options, the first thing you need to decide is which of the following you want:
  • Up lights – These shine upwards and are used for ambiance and general lighting. The advantage of up lights is that you cannot see the bulb, so the lighting is gentle. These are useful in places such as baby nurseries, up a stairwell or over a fireplace.
  • Down lights – Usually used to shine down onto something in particular or to provide more lighting than up lights, you can use down lights over a bed, over a sideboard or as low lights to light up a stairwell.
  • Picture lights – These are usually hung above a treasured painting or print and light up the picture without lighting any other part of the room.
  • Diffused lighting – Contrasting from the direct light provided by the up and down lights, diffused lighting is where the light cover throws the light over the entire wall around it providing a gentle glow somewhat like moonlight against the wall. These are usually used in a room such as a lounge or bedroom and used for mood lighting.
  • Swing arm lighting – These extendable lights can be pulled out to provide a down light over a table, or can be used as a reading lamp over a bed or armchair.

Outdoor Wall Lights

The most important consideration for outdoor wall lighting is safety. Here are some types of outdoor wall lights:

  • LED lighting – This is the safest and cheapest type of outdoor wall lighting because LEDs do not draw a heavy current.
  • Spotlight lighting – Even though spotlights use more electricity than LEDs, they are an enclosed light and so there is less likelihood of water or insects getting into the fittings.

Choosing Wall Lights

Once you have chosen the type of wall lights you want, it comes down to selecting the style.
  • Traditional – These come in classic shapes such as candles or flames and if they have lamp covers they are slightly conical.
  • Modern – Includes coloured lights and shapes such as animals and other interesting outlines. You can use LEDs, halogen or fluorescent lighting.
