Timber frames and trusses are very common in Australian homes. As well as manufacturing frames and trusses to standard sizes, it is often possible to customise the frame or truss to use bigger timber sizes or smaller spacings. Frames and trusses suppliers can provide these for any home, whether it is a simple or complicated design.
Timber frames and trusses are predominantly made from plantation-grown pine softwood, which has been kiln-dried and sized to prevent shrinking or warping. Traditionally, timber frames and trusses have been made using untreated timber however in recent years pesticide treatments such as those used in Bluepine have been introduced. These treatments are considered a more cost-effective and natural way to frame your home, as the pine is treated using organic insecticides, such as those used in fly spray.
For timber framing in exposed outdoor locations other treatments are available such as CCA or LOSP treated pine. Below is an explanation of these treatments:
For more information about treated timber and the various treatment hazard levels see the Australian Timber Database.
Steel is a great option for frames and trusses as it is one of the strongest building materials, meaning that the home will have extra strength and durability. Also, it will not burn, shrink or rot, which is beneficial in many areas of Australia. It is also termite proof. However, steel is usually more expensive than timber. Frames and trusses are engineered to the exact dimensions required thanks to a computerized program, meaning that the house will be “true”, allowing doors and windows to fit perfectly.
