Everything you need to know about finding a splashback supplier

Splashbacks are primarily protective in nature, although the decorative element is as important when making a selection. Often found in kitchens, bathroom splashbacks and laundry splashbacks should also be given equal consideration.

Splashbacks defend surrounding materials from moisture and other damaging substances. Made of many different materials, the type of splashback selected is typically based upon four characteristics: 1. budget; 2. appearance; 3. the type of activity it will be exposed to; and, 4. ease of installation.

Types of Splashbacks

  • Stainless steel: This is one of the most popular types of splashbacks. It offers a modern, minimalist look. Stainless steel is favoured because it’s easy to clean; easy to install; doesn’t stain; is able to withstand high temperatures; and, is resistant to corrosion. As it has a reflective appearance, it tends to make a space look larger.
  • Toughened glass: Another extremely popular type of splashback, glass is available in many different colours to match your existing décor. It’s also easy to clean and presents a beautiful, decorative appearance. It comes in a range of finishes, such as matte; non-reflective; and, custom made designs that are manufactured using the homeowner’s own images and artwork.
  • Tiles: A traditionally-used splashback type, tiles are still a popular choice. They’re very easy to wipe over and are durable. They come in the widest range of colours, textures and sizes. The small mosaic tile is typically favoured. Installation is not as easy as other splashbacks and the grout lines are susceptible to mould.
  • Stone and granite: The same material used in the cabinet tops can be used for the splashback. This makes the cabinetry appear larger and provides a look of continuity. Because the stone splashback is one flat piece, there are no areas for mould growth (unlike tiles). It’s also extremely resistant to chipping, making this option much safer than other splashbacks (such as glass). It can also easily be cut for electrical fittings without hurting its integrity.
  • Mirror: Recent advances in technology mean that the mirror is a suitable splashback material. Reflecting light, mirror splashbacks add that sense of space.
  • Laminate: This type of splashback comes in sheets and is easily installed. If wanted, the same material and colour can be used on the splashback as is used in the cabinet top. It’s available in solid colours and other styles (such as imitation granite).
