Everything you need to know about finding a shower head supplier

When it comes to renovating your bathroom or simply giving it a quick spruce-up, the shower head you choose can make a big difference to both the functionality and look of the room.

Shower Head Types

The two most common type of shower head are the fixed and the hand-held:
  • Fixed shower heads: These are probably the most common because they are cheaper to buy and install. As the name implies, they are permanently attached to a single location on the wall, coming straight out from the tiles. They can  range in type:
    • A shower head coming out from the shower wall, usually on a ball socket to allow for some direction of flow adjustment
    • An adjustable arm with a shower head on a ball socket to allow for height adjustment as well as direction of flow
    • A pivoted adjustable arm allows several height and direction adjustments
  • Hand-held shower heads are especially useful where there are children, elderly or disabled people in the household. The varieties include:
    • The most common type is mounted on a fixed bracket and connected to the water supply via a metal flexible hose.
    • Another option is mounted on a sliding bracket to allow the height of the shower head to be fully adjustable by moving and then tightening the clasp to the correct heights.

Choosing a Water-Saving Shower Head

With the price of water rising all the time and taking into account considerations of water conservation, it’s worth considering a shower head that saves water while still providing a strong flow. Here are some of the available options:
  • Massaging shower heads can come in water-saving varieties and they have a pulse-like jet of water out very few jets (typically around 5-8) forcing pressurised water out. Many shower heads now come with a choice of three or four jet combinations.
  • Shower Head and Body jets are an option that allows you to have a shower overhead along with jets of water to spray other areas of the body at the same time. These need to be installed by an expert due to possible damage to tiling, and they also require a diverter valve to be installed in order to allow the shower head to be used in isolation.
  • Rain-Style shower heads are not considered water-saving. As the name suggests, they flow from a large, fixed shower head in the ceiling or just below and fall like rain into the shower area. The more expensive variations of this shower head come with a fast-flow waterfall feature.
  • Hand Held shower heads have an extension from the shower head to allow an easy hand-hold. They come in a variety of styles from a ceramic handle with a brass or chrome shower head at one end to a tapered chrome or polished steel handle with the shower jets discretely inserted at the opposite end from the hose.
  • Dual shower heads allow for two people to shower together, and because they are usually on a sliding rail, can be adjusted to any height.
Depending on the water quality, shower heads should be changed out every 3 years on average.
