Shopfitters are responsible for the installation of a wide variety of fittings in the commercial sector, including office fit outs. Office fit outs are required in new builds, and also when a new leaseholder takes up residence, which typically involves the removal of old fittings and fixtures. Depending on the type and size of the business or corporation, an office fit out can involve the supply of furniture such as desks, workstations, tables and chairs. More extensive commercial spaces might involve the installation of offices, reception areas, lounges, boardrooms, and secure meeting rooms. Cabling for electrical power points and IT services may also be required. Open plan spaces may also require floor to ceiling partitions, with fully featured boardrooms that have access to audio visual equipment.
Shopfitters will have a range of skill sets in their workforce, though joinery and carpentry are the primary expertise required. They will however consult with a variety of other trades and professions during a project. This includes retailers, architects, interior designers, buyers, electricians and plumbers - amongst others.
All building and shopfitting is governed by the Building Code of Australia (BCA), as well as local council and national standards – so bear this in mind when commencing an office fit out.
