Everything you need to know about finding a pool filter supplier

A pool filter is one apparatus you simply can’t live without. Providing a cleaning function, there’s nothing better than slipping into a cool, sparkling filtered pool in the middle of summer.

Pool filters typically differ in the type of material that’s used as the filter. When selecting a filter, some considerations should include: the level of maintenance required; the durability of the filter; the level of cleanliness it can provide; and, its level of water efficiency.

Types of Pool Filters

  • Cartridge pool filters: Of the three main types of pool filters, these require the lowest maintenance. There’s no need to backwash to clean the filter (a procedure found in sand and DE filters). All that’s required is to hose down the element when needed. As such, cartridge pool filters are more water efficient than other types. Best used in small pools, some units are made especially to fit into confined areas.
  • Sand pool filters: In this type of pool filter, water is pushed through a layer of sand. The dirty water remains above the sand layer. To clean this unit, you need to run water in the reverse direction. This is known as “backwashing” – an important maintenance process. Sand filters are typically the most durable type. They can be made of polyethylene with a fibreglass outer tank, resulting in a highly corrosive resistant and UV light resistant tank.
  • DE (Diatomaceous Earth) pool filters: A highly effective pool filter, these types can provide the cleanest water of all. Made from the tiniest of fossils (diatoms), they trap the smallest particles of any filter. To clean DE filters, backwashing is also required. Once this is done, fresh DE powder is then added to the unit.

Each type of pool filter has a different life expectancy. This, of course, also depends upon its treatment. There are also a range of features that can help make maintaining and replacement of filters much easier (such as indicator glass to assist backwash inspection and drain plugs for easy maintenance). Ensure that the size of your pool filter is matched specifically with the size of your pool. Purchasing too small a pump because it’s cheaper will not adequately clean the pool.

Pool Filters: Supply and Installation

You can obtain pool filters at a pool supplies store, selected home improvement centre or an online store. Some of these stores will also provide an in-house installation service. It’s important that the pool filter chosen is suitable. A representative from a specialist pool supplies store will provide invaluable advice and list the options available to you. Take notice of the warranty on the tank and the other components. Ensure that it is quality inspected and factory pressure tested.
