Hot Water Unit Installation

Only a licensed plumber or tradesperson may carry out the installation of a new hot water unit.

There are five main types of hot water units you may implement with the help of a plumber:

• Mains pressure storage systems - The water is heated usually between 60 degrees Celsius and 70 degrees Celsius and kept ready for use in a tank.
• Low pressure or gravity feed - Gravity fed hot water systems are non-pressurised tanks located in the roof space.
• Instantaneous or continuous flow systems - This type only heats as much water as you need, when you need it.
• Solar systems - Some solar hot water systems are also available with gravity fed storage tanks.

For the last few years consumers have had the choice of employing electricians or gasfitters with appropriate licensing, as well as the traditional plumber to install their hot water units. All work carried out by these contractors is subject to the Plumbers licensing board’s installation and certification requirements that ensure all work complies with current standards. From the completion of the installation, a statutory guarantee period of six years also applies.
