Everything you need to know about finding a moulding supplier

Mouldings within the home can provide the most beautiful of appearances. They can even be a focal point in the home. Also serving a protective function and covering imperfections, mouldings are an essential element. Whether it’s a minimalist look you’re after or a traditional style, there are many types of mouldings on offer.

Types of Mouldings

Mouldings come in a range of materials, including: plaster; MDF; timber, aluminium; PVC and, even tiles. Whether you’re after a traditional or minimalist look, there’s a style to suit every theme. Some types of mouldings include:
  • Cornices: This moulding is positioned between the top of the wall and the ceiling. It sits in the corner to hide the join and to reflect light, adding an attractive and interesting element to any room.
  • Skirting boards: These are situated at the bottom of the wall. They provide a layer of protection, preventing knocks against the wall. Also covering up the unattractive joint between the wall and the floor, skirting boards add a sense of continuity to the entire home.
  • Ceiling roses: This type of moulding once had a functional purpose (i.e. allowing smoke to leave the room). Nowadays, however, ceiling roses are for appearance only. They sit above the light and are usually extremely ornamental. Apart from the traditional plaster material, they can also be made of tin, brass and polymer.
  • Chair rail/dado rails: Protecting the wall against knocks from chairs and passers by, chair rails can typically be as high as 1.5 metres. The moulding prevents objects from smashing into the wall. More durable coverings or darker paint is typically used under the moulding rail.
  • Architrave: This refers to moulding that sits around an opening in the home (e.g. window, door). Due to natural movement within the home, a gap is left between the wall and the opening, allowing movement to take place without buckling structures. Architraves are used to hide these gaps.
  • Traditional picture rails: This is a piece of moulding placed horizontally across a wall to hang pictures from.
  • Doors: Mouldings are also often found attached to doors.

Mouldings: Supply, Manufacture and Installation

Typically, the same type of moulding throughout the home is used to provide a sense of uniformity. When considering the material, think about the area it’s going in and the level of protection that will be required. A specialist supplier is best placed to advice you on the appropriate moulding for your home, as well as installtion.
