Are you out of space in your home? Don’t go to all the trouble of selling up and moving somewhere bigger! An extension either upwards or outwards can make all the difference and using an architect for your extension project means that you’ll end up with the perfect tailor made home. Here’s what you need to know about extensions and architects.
Why Use an Architect for Your Extension?
An architect is a very useful professional to use when planning and building a house extension. Firstly, they will sit down with you in order to find the flaws in your current home, and to see what you want from the new extension. They will design the extension so that it is a natural extension of your current home, and even fix flaws in the existing structure. As well as designing the extension, they will choose the most appropriate materials and fittings to use (while still fitting in with the homeowner’s desires and budget). The architect is able to liaise with other professionals and work with the local council to gain all of the relevant approvals and permits. The architect can also act as project manager, overseeing the contractors and tradesmen to ensure that they are building efficiently, to budget, and in order with building requirements.
Choosing an Architect for Your Extension
If you choose to use an architect for your extension, we have some great tips on choosing the right architect for you. It is important that the architect is fully qualified and licensed in the state that they are practicing in. They should be registered with one of the architectural bodies within Australia such as the Royal Australian Institute of Architects or the Architects Accreditation Council of Australia.
Ask to see the architect’s references or examples of previous work that they have undertaken. While an architect costs money initially to hire, the money is well worth the cost as they can actually save you substantial amounts of money throughout the extension process (allowing for more accurate quoting, using materials that fit your budget, undertaking project management etc).
Make sure that you are comfortable with your chosen architect, as good communication will be essential, especially in the design and planning stages.
