If you have a heritage home or a home that requires conservation, you’ll have an idea of all the work and regulations that surround these homes. Don’t try and go through the minefield yourself as there are architects that specialise in heritage and conservation work. Here’s what you need to know about heritage and conservation architects.
What is a Heritage and Conservation Architect?
A heritage and conservation architect is an architect whose specialty lies in the conservation and restoration of buildings that have been heritage declared, whether residential, commercial or to be preserved for historic purposes. These architects carry out tasks such as preparing conservation plans, undertaking studies on heritage buildings, and designing and carrying out works that need to be done on heritage or conservation buildings. Heritage and conservation architects are able to work closely with the authorities in order to gain the relevant permits and permissions to undergo works on heritage buildings and they can also project manage, overseeing the professionals that are involved with the actual work. Essentially, these architects aim to make the buildings comfortable, practical and relevant to today’s uses while still retaining and celebrating all of the heritage aspects of the buildings (such as the facade, the materials used, the colours, and so on).
Selecting a Heritage and Conservation Architect
The heritage and conservation architect can work for private owners, local councils, state or federal governments, or commercial clients. When choosing the architect, it is vital that they are familiar with the (often complicated and convoluted) requirements set out by heritage councils, local councils or other authorities. Of course, the architect should also have the standard qualifications, be registered with the appropriate authorities, and be fully insured and licensed. Ideally, they will be accredited with the state Heritage Office, and also be accredited the ICOMOS, the foremost international heritage body.
