Everything you need to know about finding a gate supplier

Gates protect our homes offering security, keeping unwanted visitors out or keeping our pets and children safe. There’s no denying that they can also provide a beautiful element to our home.

Types of Gates

There are many types of gates. Your selection will depend upon a number of aspects, including: what the gate is to be used for; what your budget is; the existing fencing material; and, the style of your home. It’s important to consider all these aspects when choosing a type of gate.
  • Uses: Gates are not all for show. The material, size and components will be based upon their specific function. Some of the most common gates in and around the home are used for: foot traffic access; driveway access; safety gates; and, security. Safety gates are predominantly to prevent children entering certain areas of the home, whilst security gates, such as those at an entrance, will be fitted with specific types of latches and locks.
  • Action: Gates come in a range of opening actions. The swing gate is the most common and works on hinges. It requires enough space to be able to swing out to open. In the case of a sliding gate, it resolves the problem of a lack of space (being able to slide along the fence line). The cantilever gate is also a sliding type of gate that slides along a unique system.
  • Material: Gates are framed and then cladding is attached. Some of the different types of gate materials can include: powder coated galvanised steel, marine grade stainless steel, glass, wrought iron, aluminium, timber, colourbond, chain wire and vinyl.
  • Automatic: These are powered for convenience. Making use of a remote or wired to a switch, most types of gates can be converted to automatic mode by specialist companies.

Gates: Supply, Manufacture and Installation

Gate and fencing suppliers are best placed to fully design, manufacture and install your customised gate in line with your unique requirements. The life expectancy of the gate material should be taken into consideration during selection. Some require regular upkeep and periodic maintenance, while others are virtually maintenance free.
