Concrete retaining walls are a great feature in any garden and they’re great for holding back large loads, so are absolutely perfect for things such as terracing. Read on to find out what concrete is such a good choice for retaining walls.
Concrete is a great material for retaining walls as it is strong, virtually maintenance free, and will last for many years. You also don’t have to worry about termites or other insects causing damage. The retaining walls can be made from concrete sleepers in a plain or timber look finish, concrete blocks, or from poured concrete. They are available in different colours (by mixing the colour through the concrete or coating the concrete) so you can find one that perfectly fits your garden’s colour scheme.
Concrete is suitable for building small retaining walls through to those that are extremely large. Larger walls need to have reinforced concrete in their construction and should be structurally engineered in order to ensure that they are safe. No matter what size wall it is, it needs to have the correct drainage installed as water can otherwise cause a lot of damage to even the strongest retaining wall.
Some concrete retaining walls can be built by confident DIYers but for the best result they should be professionally built by someone like a gardener, landscaper, concretor, or builder. Check if they will supply the materials for you or if you will need to supply them yourself. Of course, the quote should include the costs of materials if they are supplied as well as the actual cost to build the wall.
