Carpet is a great floor covering as it is comfortable and looks great in any decor, but what happens when your carpet starts to look a little tatty or get damaged? You don’t have to opt for the expensive option of replacing it when in many cases, repairing your carpet will bring it back to looking like new. Here’s what you need to know.
Your carpet may need repairs for a variety of reasons. Your carpets may have stretched out over time, causing wrinkles and bumps to appear. Maybe your carpets have gotten holes in them, or they’ve been burnt (e.g. by cigarettes or irons), or they’ve been torn somehow. Another common problem is when bleach has been spilled, or you’ve stained the carpet in such a way that you can’t get the stain out.
Thankfully, your carpets can be repaired by a professional carpet layer or a specialist carpet repairer. The most common way to repair carpets is to cut out the affected area and replace it with new carpet using a process known as “invisible mending”. The new piece of carpet is taken from an inconspicuous area such as inside a wardrobe or from carpet off cuts. This is why it is recommended that you keep larger off cuts from carpet installation, so that they can be used for repairs where required. If your carpets have stretched, the professional will restretch the carpet so that it is lying nice and flat once more. For bleached areas, spot dyeing may bring the carpet back to its original colour.
