An interior designer, while being involved in decoration tasks, is also responsible for ensuring the functionality, efficiency and safety of a space within the home or other building. Therefore, interior design requires an understanding of construction, lighting, colour and furniture. Interior designers are qualified to make structural changes to the home, and are able to rearrange the interior of the home to better suit the needs of the client. This may include relocating a kitchen or a bathroom for better access and functionality. As well as making changes to the home, interior designers will ensure that the new interior matches the architecture of the home and that the inside and the outside of the building work together.
The interior designer is responsible for:
- talking with clients and architects to find out what the client needs and to ensure that safety requirements are complied with
- developing designs that are functional, look good and suit the client’s needs
- preparing working drawings for interior construction
- selecting materials, finishes, lighting, furnishings and other equipment
- preparing cost estimates for materials and labour and gaining approval from the client
- organising and supervising tradespeople
- carrying out inspections
- working with specialists to ensure that fire, building codes, engineering and other safety requirements are met
As the interior designer is responsible for structural design as well as for surface design, they are highly trained, either through private institutions or at university. When choosing your professional, ask to see their qualifications and also any references that they have. It is important that you feel comfortable with your professional so take the time to talk to them and find out if they share your vision for the home.
