Kitchen Design

STEP 1 – RESEARCH
The very first thing I recommend people do when they are looking at a new kitchen is research. There are two main websites that look solely at kitchen functionality and design:
www.dynamicspace.com from Blum, and
www.intelligent-kitchens.com from Hettich
Both of these sites have been developed by each individual hardware manufacturer. They focus purely on layout and functionality. You will notice that both of their design principals revolve around 5 key zones. If you understand this concept you will find the process of designing your new dream kitchen far less daunting.

STEP 2 – DIMENSIONS
The second thing you will need is to get accurate dimensions of the space that you are looking to fill. This step requires you run through a basic 3 step checklist as follows:
1 – Overall room dimensions – The length of each wall and overall ceiling height
2 – Window and doorway positions – The location of each opening within each wall. In the case of windows and servery openings, their height up from the floor. It is also important to check the window behind the sink area, in case the bench top runs under the bottom of the window
3 – Services positions – The location of any plumbing and electrical items, maintaining these in their current location if possible, will assist with your overall budget

STEP 3 – LAYOUT
This step is the most important in the process of designing your new kitchen. If you have understood the research step thoroughly, you should be able to come up with a basic plan for us to look at. Remembering the 5 key zones and their purpose, try tocome up with the best possible layout to suit your space. In some cases it may not be possible to create the “perfect” layout and compromises will have to be made. Also, don’t forget that if you are not a kitchen designer, TKW may be able to come up with another solution that better suits the space. This is our field of expertise and we will always be here to assist you. Going through this layout process, also gives us a level of understanding that you have achieved, and we can help further explain the areas that are proving more difficult.

STEP 4 – STYLE AND FINISHES
In this step we ask that you look at the basic “style” or “look” that you are want to create. Whether you want to go for “Contemporary, Classic, Retro or Basic” will affect your overall budget. It’s also worth remembering, that the external finish should in no way affect the functionality of the kitchen, it’s purely the bit that is on “show”. There are many tools that will help us understand the style that you want to create. The first place that we suggest to start is in our photo gallery. Here we have various kitchens, both renovations and new installations that we have completed. We also find that magazines are a great place to find pictures that give a general idea of the “look” that you are trying to create. Then there is the internet, which is brimming with ideas. If you enter your search for the style of kitchen that you like into Google, then select the “view images only" icon on the Google task bar. This should display images from the selected style that you are looking at

STEP 5 – BUDGET
YES!!! This is always the scary bit, unfortunately, it’s the most important. Deciding on a budget lets us guide you through the style selection process. The more expensive the external finishes are, the more the overall cost of the project will be. At TKW we try to help you find a balance of style and finishes with a good budget outcome. At this point you should also ask yourself what is more important, external looks, or internal functionality. Applying too much of your budget to the external finishes, before maximizing the internal storage ability of your “new” kitchen, can be detrimental in the future.
