At Oakville construction we are commited to the highest level of workmanship and customer service. We adhere to, and where possible go beyond, the work practices as set out by the building code of Australia (BCA), Australian standards and Australian standard tolerences.
At Oakville construction we are commited to minimising the environmental impact on all of our projects in order to protect the environment, minimize inconvenience to our clients and to assist those who may be sensitive to the fumes associated with building products.
We separate our waste wherever practical for recycling and ensure no chemicals or rubbish reaches our waterways. We will freely offer our help and advice to improve the performance of your home or building to reduce both carbon emissions and your utility bills.
Decks are one of Oakville’s specialities. Some people see decks as being quite simple to build and this is true if you know the tricks. There can be a big difference between a handyman built deck and Oakville’s decks.
For a start, your subframe is very important and if it’s not built to code, you can expect bouncing and even failure. We have had to repair or rebuild many of these decks and we hate seeing timber get a bad name as a result. Your deck should last decades so don’t settle for half a job. We always go over and above the building code so you can be sure that from the footings to the joists, your deck will be solid.
Your decking boards are the most aesthetically important item. There are a range of sizes and timber species in decking creating different looks. You might want narrow boards with small gaps for the heritage look or wide chunky boards for the country look. The gaps are actually quite important as too large and the deck is uncomfortable to walk on or too small and you have difficulty keeping the deck clean, not to mention the risk of your beautifull decking boards rotting out before their time.
Nail heads in external decking should be level with the top of the decking boards, otherwise they create a small well that will fill up with water and cause rot. This means that the nail heads are exposed so the way they look is important. Many decks are built with staggered nails because the carpenter doesn’t have to worry about keeping them straight. At Oakville we have developed systems to ensure nice straight lines of nails. When you complement this with stainless steel nails, they become a feature rather than an eyesore and you will thank us every time you see your neighbour’s rusty, uneven decking nails.
At the end of the day you are going to live with your deck for many years, whether it’s a masterpiece or a disaster. If you are considering selling in the future, ask yourself if the deck is going to be a feature of the property or a feature of a building report.

Stairs have to be built within certain guidelines otherwise you will find them uncomfortable and dangerous to use. We have what is called an easy going range which still gives us the flexibility to adjust both the length of the treads and the height of the steps to suit your requirements. The height of the staircase has to be measured millimeter perfect so that each step can be calculated to be identical in height.
External stairs are built without risers to maximize airflow and allow water to run off. A riser is the vertical part between two treads. To attach the stair treads to the stringers, there are two main ways. The stringers are the two support beams either side of the staircase.
One way is to use the steel stair brackets available at most hardware stores, which is the most common way, even by tradesmen. Structurally, these brackets are adequate but one problem is that both the brackets and the screws supporting them are visible as you walk up the stairs, detracting from the otherwise clean lines of your spectacular new staircase. The other problem is that, over time, with the constant weathering, daily use and natural expansion and contraction of the timber, gaps normally form between the treads and the stringer. This can make the whole staircase hard to clean and seem older than it really is. Water also has a tendency to sit in these gaps and that is something we always try to avoid when using timber outdoors.
At Oakville we build our external staircases traditionally which involves using a router to house all the treads tightly into each stringer. The staircase is held together by compression only, no nails, screws or glue. It is a somewhat more time consuming method but the results speak for themselves. Our staircases are far stronger yet the timber is free to expand or contract without affecting the appearance. There is nowhere for water to become trapped and there are very few visible fixings. Oakville stairs are beautiful and built to last a lifetime.
All our internal stairs are routed into the stringers in a similar way to the external stairs and to the same high standards. Your stairs can be designed to blend into the furniture or be the focus of the house. If you need your existing stairs moved or replaced we can make all your structural adjustments and have the new set designed, built and installed so you don’t have to worry about a thing. We can finish them in carpet, a range of polished timber or we can even build you a single stringer staircase for the architectural look.

Pergolas, patio covers and carports
Whether it’s a federation style open pergola to complement all the hard work you’ve put into the garden or some affordable weather protection over your entertainment area, we can help you get the solution you need.
Lightweight steel framed patio covers and carports can complement your home affordably whilst offering a no maintenance solution. We use the Stratco high quality engineered roof systems which are structuraly guaranteed for fifteen years. We can build flat roofs, gables, curved roofs or basically anything you want. Follow this link for more information www.stratco.com.au
If you want something a little more classic, let us quote a timber framed roof with colourbond or laserlight or a mixture of the two. A timber framed roof can be built out of hardwood or treated pine. We can leave your rafters exposed to make a feature of the timber or line the underside for clean lines and downlights.
If you need your existing roof replaced or repaired, we are able to arrange all of this so you’re not spending your valuable time chasing tradesmen.
Windows and awnings
Windows are an important part of any home. Your choice of windows affects aesthetics, thermal comfort and light.
You might want timber windows for a classic look, aluminium for a no maintenance finish or a mixture to get the best of both worlds. We can even offer aluminium on the outside and timber on the inside! Orientation of the windows also plays a large part in the thermal comfort of your home and Oakville can help you get it right. If you find that your house feels dark and cold in winter or sweltering in summer, you’re windows could be playing a role. Let us replace, reposition or enlarge your windows and transform your home. If your windows are letting the outside temperatures control your comfort, let us show you our alternative to double glazing for a fraction of the price.
At Oakville we often look to the past to find solutions to today’s building problems and one very effective solution to a number of problems is a window awning. If installed correctly, window awnings can dramatically increase the lifespan of a timber window by protecting it from the elements. They are also an affordable solution to maximise passive solar temperature control of your home. They are a value adding feature and we can make your awning to suit any style from the ultra modern to a traditional federation style.
As carpenters we lean towards genuine timber weatherboards but there are many alternatives available on the market today and the skills and tools required are still the same. Timber is not necessarily ideal in areas that are hard to reach for maintenance and it might not be the look you’re after. A number of affordable high quality imitations are available and we are more than happy to run you through your options. If it’s the rendered look you want we can install rendered blue board or texturecoat your existing cladding. Just call us to get a price.
Although we can meet all your flooring requirements, we specialise in tongue and groove timber flooring because the traditional is often the best. Most federation homes still have their original timber floors which can be over a hundred years old and there’s a reason for this. With protection from the elements and normal household maintenance, there is no reason for a well laid timber floor to ever fail. Tiles, carpet, floating floors and almost any other product you can think of has a limited lifespan and when they are worn out, there’s no other solution except ripping it up and starting again. A beautiful timber floor is warm to touch and look at, can be refinished any number of times with minimal disruption, goes with any décor and will last as long as the house. Even when they start to wear, they still look beautiful and heavy traffic areas can be touched up easily.
At Oakville we use a secret nail gun to nail our floors which means you can’t see any nail holes. We also put a special rubberised glue between the joists and the boards which means no squeaking, although some clients request strategic areas to have no glue for intruder alert! No problem. Other benefits include easy cleaning, timeless fashion and very low embodied energy.
If you think there may already be some old timber floor hiding under those old floor coverings, we can come in, remove the old stuff, repair any holes or damage and polish it up for a spectacular transformation at minimal cost. In fact, we think the older the boards are, the more beauty, depth and character they have.
Being carpenters first and foremost, hanging a door well is one of the jobs that sets us apart from our competition, particularly when installing a door into an existing door jamb which might be out of level, out of square and even twisted. Have you ever looked at your doors and seen uneven gaps between the door and the frame or a door that bounces open when you close it or worse still a bogged up hinge or door lock. These are all things which a good carpenter would not leave and we only employ good carpenters. Give us a call and we’ll come around, help you choose the type of door, lock and hinges you want, install it to perfection and even take the old door away.It will all be done before you know it.
Your beautiful old house deserves the best. Not only is your house a memorial to quality craftsmanship but in its original condition your home has a value and beauty beyond that of modern housing. To help you capitalise on this, Oakville has a large range of heritage fixtures and fittings to help you add that little bit of detail to give your castle the wow factor. Our catalogue includes
- window awnings, boxes and pelmets,
- arches and keyhole openings
- decorative barge boards, fascias and finials
- garden gates and cedar flyscreens.
- Handrails and balusters
- Plus more.
Whatever you need give us a call and we’ll come around with a comprehensive catalogue and help you choose the right detailing for your home.
We can even source and install original or reproduction doors and windows to match your home and bring it back to its former glory.
We’re at a point in time where not only do we have to reduce our energy consumption to save the environment, but you can expect the financial payoffs to keep on climbing. There’s nothing we love more than finishing a home that we know will be more comfortable and have lower utility bills than when we started. There’s lots of off the shelf products we can install in your home like like solar hot water, water tanks or even solar panels but there’s other aspects of your home that need more individual attention.
Passive solar heating can be as simple as putting extra windows on the northern side of your home and ensuring that either your eaves or awnings are correctly positioned in relation to them. We can increase the effectiveness of this simple concept with things like louvre awnings and strategic placement of thermal mass. Southern and western windows should be kept to a minimum or, where possible, eliminated altogether. For most of us that cannot avoid southern and western windows, magnetite offers an ingenious solution. Instead of replacing your perfectly good windows with expensive double glazing, we can attach a second pane of Perspex to your existing windows for the same result at a fraction of the cost, both financially and in carbon emmisions.
Ventilation can be another source of temperature control inside your home. Have you ever been in your roof space in the middle of the day? It can become amazingly hot, even in winter. We can set up a system that will draw this heat back down into your home in winter! The system can also be set up to draw cool air in from the southern side of your home in summer. Who needs airconditioning? Other benefits of this system include great ventilation for your roof space and elimination of condensation and moulds in the home which can be a godsend for asthma and allergy sufferers. It works with a series of fans which operate on about 10c a day. Call us for more information.
Insulation, insulation, insulation. Without this it doesn’t matter how clever we get, your home will always be uncomfortable. We hate to rabbit on about it though because we’re not telling you anything you don’t already know. We’ll just leave it at that.
Apart from that there are hundreds of new and innovative products and ideas out there that can have a dramatic effect on our overall energy and water consumption. If you want to find out more, start by looking at this link yourhome.gov.au or give us a call. We are not eco designers but we have a strong interest in the subject and we can help you find the products and solutions you need. Remember that you don’t have to turn your home into the ultimate eco retreat in one go and whatever you want to do, we will be with you every step of the way.
Don’t forget that despite our love for timber, we are fully qualified and insured builders so we can help you organise all aspects of your project for an all in, hassle free quote. We are a young and energetic husband and wife team and we’ve been operating locally for over two years. We want to grow our business and the only way to do that is to make sure every job is perfect which is why we have such a long list of satisfied customers.
