There are many reasons why people consider having there swimming pools removed.

With the changes in the Australian climate and water becoming a precious commodity the use of water has to be assessed.

The State and Local Governments have implemented water restrictions that vary from locations throughout Victoria. Some country areas have very scarce limited access to water and in some cases there local shires are having it brought in to replenish the town supplies.

Here in Melbourne we are currently at 3a restrictions and that has affected the way in which people with pools can refill them. Bucket by bucket can be very time consuming and to buy in water to refill it can be costly. The average size to fill can cost around $1500.

The expense on pool maintenance with a monthly pool maintenance service and the cost of chemicals can also put a strain on household budget. Not to mention those that spend their precious time looking after the pool themselves. The ever increasing cost for heating is something to consider.

Statistics released by Life Saving Victoria for 2006/2007 have shown that there were 37 unintentional drownings which occurred last year and of that number 14 occurred in the home environment.

Children from 0-4 years of age are at most risk, however deaths of children aged 5-14 has also increased.

The trend today with new housing estates is for smaller backyards and having the family home entertainment system. There was an article in the Melbourne Herald Sun that commented on how “swimming pools were no longer fashionable”. When children leave home the burden of the pool normally falls on Mum and Dad to deal with or as you get a little older and you’re not using it much.

My wife and I would like to thank you for removing our in-ground pool last month. With a hyperactive child in the house, it has been a tremendous relief to see the pool filled in.

As this is our first home, I must confess we were nervous about the whole process and unsure about what the outcome would be. Much of that disappeared after we met you; your understanding of our concerns and the trouble you took to carefully explain every step of the three-day process left no doubt in my mind that getting rid of the pool was the right thing to do and, indeed, that you were the right person to do it.
