Feng Shui (pronounced Foong Schway) literally means “Wind and Water” and it is a way of creating a harmonious environment within the home. Feng Shui helps us to understand how energy moves throughout the home and provides ways of maximizing the benefits of good energy and minimizing any harmful effects of poor energy. To this end, Feng Shui is about balance. Feng Shui is practised by professionals but an interior decorator may understand the basic principles.
In Feng Shui, both the elements that we can see and the elements that we can’t see are considered. The elements that can be seen include the placement of doors and adjacent buildings for example, the furnishings, or the slope of the block. The unseen elements refer more to how the elements that you can see will affect you, and therefore it is more about the energies. The unseen elements can attract positive or negative energies and the goal of Feng Shui is to balance these – this is often why it is thought of as the “acupuncture” of buildings as it corrects the building’s energy pathways, allowing more positive energies to flow through.Feng Shui practitioners will consider the following things and more when looking at your home:
While it is a good idea to use the services of a professional to ensure that your home has optimal Feng Shui, there are some simple tips that you can follow yourself to improve the energies in your home:
Feng Shui professionals are highly trained and have years of experience. When it comes to choosing a professional, it is not necessarily a case of the cheaper the better. It is more important to choose someone that you feel comfortable with and that you have confidence in. Feng Shui consultations should involve a form of building astrology as well as your personal Feng Shui Astrology, so that the professional is able to see how you will interact with the building. The professional should also focus on the forms and shapes in the environment, that is, taking into account the outside influences such as intersections, parks, neighbouring buildings and so forth. Finally, the consultation should provide remedies that will enhance the positive aspects of your home and reduce or eliminate any negative aspects.
