Windows are one of the essential elements of the home, and the perfect window will set the look for any room. However, the window relies on its frame to look good and be functional, so read on to learn more.
Common Window Styles
Common styles of windows include:
Double hung windows - these are popular in all styles of homes and feature two sliding sashes that move independently of each other. They are traditionally made from timber but aluminium is also available.
Bi fold windows - these are designed to let the outdoors in. It is best to choose bi folds that open outwards in order to give you more space.
Awning windows - these are functional windows that operate using a winding device, and you can leave them open indefinitely without worrying about the weather or security.
Sliding windows - these are versatile and are suited to most styles of home.
Casement windows - these windows are used mainly in heritage and classic homes but also look great in retro and art deco homes. They generally open outwards at a 90 degree angle.
About Window Frames
There are several different types of window frames available. Here is an overview of the most common.
Aluminium or metal - these are strong, light and maintenance free. However, they conduct heat very rapidly so it is important to have a thermal break - an insulating plastic strip, placed between the inside and outside of the frame and sash.
Composite - these frames use composite wood products such as particle board and laminated strand lumber. They are very stable, with the same structural and thermal properties as normal wood but they are more resistant to moisture and decay.
Fibreglass - these frames are dimensionally stable and have air cavities. When these cavities are filled with insulation, they have a better thermal performance compared to wood or vinyl.
Vinyl - these frames are usually made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) with UV stabilisers to stop the sunlight from degrading the material. It is versatile and has good insulating value. They have good moisture resistance but may expand and warp at high temperatures, or crack in very low temperatures. Insulted vinyl frames are filled with insulation and thus perform better than wood and standard vinyl at keeping heat out or in.
Wood - these frames can be well insulated but they will expand and contract according to the weather conditions, and can also be heavier and thicker than other frames. They also require the most maintenance.
